neither the freedos, nor the ms-dos 6.22 attrib commands set the hidden attribute. They appear to work but the file does not hide and the attribute is not set upon checking. The read only one works.
By the way, I've got dosemu running with ws, quattro-pro, mouse, foxpro, and various utilities. what a rush! I will put together a list of what I did (head sore from banging against brick wall) for others to benefit from.
