the dosemu script is supposed to automatically take care of this.

In particular the set of commands:

xset +fp /usr/local/share/dosemu/Xfonts
xlsfonts -fn vga11x19

should give you "vga11x19". Does it give any errors to you?
Are you using X remotely?
