Thanks for getting back in touch Stu! All versions of chkdsk are DOS-based (even in Windows 10) which do understand NTFS. Obviously one from something like DOS 6.22 would not know anything about NTFS. I would be interested in running a modern version of it. The ntfs-3g chkdsk equivalent can't be used because it is not a true check disk. It can only perform some basic checks. Everything I have come across says to use the native chkdsk for an actual check.
