I've done a bunch of mucking around, and I've made a few important discoveries:

Firstly, my Steel Panthers II and III crashes were related to the actual
configuration of the game itself. I reinstalled it under dosemu,and it ran!

Almost....

If I had sound on, and configured the game to use it (SB AWE64, configured as
either SB 8 or SB16 - tried both) the game would try and play the opening
music, and would repeat the opening 3 notes forever.

With sound turned off (in both dosemu and the game) it ran through the opening
video sequences just fine, but when the game display came up, the mouse did not
respond (it worked just fine in the install program)

I'm not entirely sure if it hung at this point, or if it just couldn't find the
mouse, as they are no keyboard shortcuts on the game interface to verify if the
problem is mouse driver releated, or if the game itself has hung or locked.

Behaviour was the same in both SPII and SPIII.

I'm so close to getting this working I can taste it. :) What debugging
information can I produce to either solve this myself or get a dosemu developer
involved?
