I don't have an answer for you but I experienced the same thing this
weekend. I went one desperate step past this and re-installed Linux
since I didn't have much to lose. Problem then got so I had NO mouse.
When I installed Linux, it couldn't find my mouse so I told it where it
was but that didn't help much.

I cant remember the exact name of the program I ran (Linux is down now
for another reason so can't look it up) mouse-fix or mouse-diagnostic
or something like that and it still couldn't find it. Running
mouse-fix (?) /dev/ttyS0 may simplify the troubleshooting.

I booted with another HD that had windows on it and my mouse works fine
so I know it's not a hardware problem.

sorry I had no help but you are not alone
good luck
