I also had trouble with DOSEmu. Although I want to use FreeDos, I just
wanted to understand lredir for future references.

How do you use it? I'm not sure I can find it or use it.

Subject: Question

Hi!

Before Im starting in setting up "dosemu" i have a question. I have a
simple 50k-exe-file (lan-encrypt) running in a dosbox unter NT. The
program is used to generate encrypted cfg-files for
LanCity-Cable-Modems. I dont want to run the app on NT because its not
so easy to remote administrate. Is there a way to start dosemu or
something like this as a script with command-line parameters, eg

dosemu lan-encrypt file1 file2 file3

If you have any idea to to this, please let me know!

Best regards

Among DOSEMU's DOS commands is a unix.exe that allows you to do exactly
that. Running just 'unix' inside DOSEMU will give you a help text.

You'll probably need the 'unix -e' or 'unix -s' variant.

A simple example:

  xdos -E "edit config.sys"

and then, inside DOSEMU, 'unix -e' will start the DOS editor.

I have a problem installing MSDOS 6.22 from disks in dosemu, if trie to
boot from floppy A: with the -A option the booting hangs, if I make a
copy of the diskimage on harddisk an trie to boot with $_vbootimage
option the first floppy can be booted but I have no chance to change the
floppy as needed for the installation procedure.

Has someone an idea how to solve the problem?

My configuration:

Subject: Response tweaking?

Hello all:

I have a Compaq Deskpro 486SX with 12MB and Redhat 5.1 installed with two
seagate hard drives. I'm trying to set up dosemu to access some netware
resources. I'm using dosemu 0.98.8.0 (Console based access only, NO X).
Dos is loading from the secondary hard disk which has a twenty meg
partition. I was wondering if there is a way to improve the performance?
Running a dos utility called syschk.exe while in the emulator system speed
was indicated as 37.xx (Mhz maybe, I'm not sure). Running the same
utility in Dos gives a 93.xx speed rating. Can I tweak something to
improve the performance. The screen refreshes are really slow. I was
hoping that I might have missed something. Hope someone can help.
I can access the netware resources, but response is what's holding me back
now.

Thanks,
Brian Seppanen

Just I have solved the problem:
- -the program Tascbase has a copy protection: one time in the month the
program ask for the original CD
- -unfortunately , just in this case, the CD-drive contents a music CD
- - the program was not able to recognize this and die.

When I have removed the music-CD and put a normal CD-ROM inside, the
programs works pefectly.

It is possible. Make an own hd-image with a startup utility in the
"autoexec.bat" where you can you the parameters. Everytime you start
dosemu it will run your tool automatically.

I hope this will fix your problem.

It's a bug in dosemu. You need to upgrade to dosemu 0.98.8 (from
ftp.dosemu.org)

Subject: Deleting locked files

Hello there. Just joined this list so thanks for the opportunity.

We have dosemu (0.98.7) running on Debian (slink). I have built a
hdimage with MSDOS 6.20. Each user loads share.exe and the
application is compiled in clipper and relies on file locking via
share. The files used in the application are mapped from the Linux
filesystem with redir.

All this seems to work OK. However, the application regularly
behaves badly when it gets confused about exclusive access to a
file. Under "normal" networked DOS (e.g. Lantastic, Novell etc) if a
program attempts to delete a file that another user has locked then
an error message is returned (and the file not deleted). Dosemu
does not return an error and does not delete the file. The
application takes the "no error" condition to mean that the file was
deleted meaning that no other user has the file locked!! This is of
course wrong and so mayhem ensues for a while....

Is there any way to get Dosemu to return an error message in this
condition? Interestingly, attempting to delete the file from Linux
fails with an error message ("device or resource busy...")

Any help would be most appreciated.

Is someone in the FreeDOS crowd working on redirector issues, or is this a
permanent restriction? I see this advice a lot, but never anything
indicating that the situation might change. (Maybe I should add fixing
this to the list of things I really ought to get around to.)

You need either to be root or DOSEMU run suid-root to access
real (non-emulated) ports.

Subject: DPMI client count for DOSEMU

Some time ago when run GNU Pascal tests under DOSEMU
(DJGPP port of egcs-1.1.2+ GPC 19990118) I found that the default
number of DPMI clients was not enough. Increasing it fixed the problem
(Also 16 was enough)

Subject: keyboard and autorepeat

Hello,

under dosemu 0.98.8 and 0.99.13 I have still problems with the
autorepeat function of the keyboard code. The dos version I use is 6.22.
In some applications, e.g. in word 5.0, the autorepeat function

I do not keep the key being pressed for too long a time - just a usual

The problem doesn't occur under "real" dos , but only under dosemu.
And what's really astonishing: It doesn't appear on e v e r y

has vanished...

Does anyone how to avoid those annoying repeat function even
in the first minutes dosemu is running?

Thank you.

Subject: Running DOS commands automatically

- --pf9I7BMVVzbSWLtt

Here's a shell script I've been using and improving
for the last two years. It executes a series of DOS com-
mands in the current directory, without interfering with
any other active DOSemu processes.

     Usage is pretty simple:

dodos 2m << xx
bcc -N -Z -O -ml -I. cbrom.c expand.c compress.c public.c
exitemu
xx

     or

echo -e "dir > dosdir\nexitemu" | dodos

The "2m" is optional; it's a new feature that says,
"If DOSemu doesn't finish in two minutes, kill it." It's
very helpful when I want to do an overnight build of 500
BIOS parts, and the 20th one locks up with "Memory allo-
cation error, System Halted".

Some time ago, it seemed impossible. With Alexandro's CPU Emulation it
might be doable, but i guess it will take some time.

Did you have a look at a recent Wine version. It can do a lot of
Dos-Things too, with dosmod installed. If your programm doesn't use
fancy Dos-Graphics, it is well worth a try ( http://www.winehq.com)
and perhaps a bug report to comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine if it
doesn't work.

Subject: VGA font - found the problem

Hi there,
I just subscribed to the list and saw that many of you had the
VGA font problem when running RH6.0.
It turns out the font server on this Linux release is broken. More
information can be found on comp.os.linux.x
The solution is to upgrade the XFree86 packages from
XF...-48 to XF...-52. (I have lost the info on where to
download them, but it should be easy to find). After that
use chkfontpath to first remove and then add all the font
directories (assuming that mkfontdir has been run in them).
This solved the problem for me and now DOSEMU finds the
font without any problems.
Y.

Is there any way to correct the display problem I have? I run the dos

It adds |'s around the outside edges. Is there any way to correct that?

Just from looking at "dos --help" I can say that it's either "dos -g",
"dos -V", or "dos -c".

Subject: CIV again ...

hello there!

lately i reported i got civ running and
some days later it didnt run (_very_ slooooow.)

no it runs in the normal speed again - and i havent done anything ...
(but sometimes its slow again, but restarting dosemu solves this problem
...)

hmm... very strange.

but theres another problem with civ :

pressing some keys like ESC lets it crash (sometimes hang, sometimes
exceptions)

also console switching (when running it on the console) sometimes lets
crash it,
but this could be a problem with dosemu and not with civ.

if anyone has an idea, how to solve this problem, please let me know ...

bye
ew.

that and an experimental version of DosEmu; something mush be wrong with
them. BTW, which font can you use that allows resizing of the screen
with the mouse?

yes, this sounds like you need IBM graphics. Edit your dosemu.conf file
and where it says term_charset "" or something like that put in ibm.

Subject: WINSIZE problem on 0.98.5 DOSEMU

Hi,

I am having a slight problem right now with the WINSIZE in DOSEMU (0.98.5).
I tried to modify the window size so that it would fill out most of the
screen, but it stays as small as before. I modified the $_X_winsize "" to
values like $_X_winsize (860,600) or so, but nothing would happen.
I also tried to apply this patch:

Does anyone have a clue how to solve this problem?

Runtime error 200 explained

http://www.brain.uni-freiburg.de/~klaus/pascal/runerr200/

Synopsis:

Borland Turbo Pascal 7

The bug is in the initialization for the delay procedure that is part of the
initialization of the Crt unit. The delay initialization is called in every
program that uses the Crt
unit, not just on those that use the delay procedure. The Crt unit is included in
most programs that are written in Borland Pascal.

The delay initialization counts how often a tiny do-nothing loop must be called in
order to delay by 55 milliseconds (time measured by reading the Bios Time Counter
at memory address 40:6C that ticks 18.2 times a second, i.e. each 55
milliseconds).

So, any ideas on avoiding this in Dosemu?

Bill

Subject: problem with programs shelling out to other programs

Hi. I am currently using dosemu-0.99.13 with kernel 2.2.10 and I have
a consistent problem in that programs -- everything from pcboard to
telix, even to a mail program -- whenever they try to shell out to
another program I get exceptions and usually the process dies. I have
64mb of memory with extended memory to DOS at 32mb.

Is there something which can be done about this -- it would make
dosemu work much better for me. I imagine the programs are using one
of those libraries which swap the program to extended memory, but I am
not certain of this -- in the case of telix I have turned this off
specifically, so its supposed to be an ordinary shell out, but it
always fails.

Thanks much for your assistance.

Subject: two problems

Hi,

first of all I want to say you all did a great job, dosemu is really
great...

I try to run a big Dos Application under Dosemu and there are two
problems
i can't solve.

1.) The dos-Application uses <ALT-Fx> and <STRG-Fx> keys... how can i
configure
my linux that i can use them (most run with dos not xdos) ? I played
a
little bit with loadkeys and was able to make linux not to switch
the
Consoles while pressing <ALT-Fx>, but the keystroke isnt realized by
the
    dos-application

2.) This DOS-Application should run about 30 times per linuxbox. This
Application is written in C/C++ and compiled with watcom compiler
in protected mode, most time the application has to wait on
keystrokes
so the programmer tried to give the idle-cpu time back, but the the
clock runs only at about the halfspeed... Time is extremly important
in
thios application so i cant ignore that.
The Programmer uses following function :

> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
> INT 2F - MS Windows, DPMI, various - RELEASE CURRENT VIRTUAL MACHINE
> TIME-SLICE
> AX = 1680h
> Return: AL = status

> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

this problem didnt exist while running under real Win9x or NT.

If you want i can post you a test-program

the really strange thing is :

        - start dosemu
        - look at the time (dos-command time)
        - start the testprogram
        - clock works slower
        - after a while i stop the testprogram, the time is e.g. 5 min.
          after theright time
        - start once again dos-command "time" and get the correct (!) time

when i set

$_hogthreshold = (0)

the clock works fine, but the process uses all of my cpu-time :-(

I tried the last stable version of dosemu and also the last developer
release...
