Overriding vars in dosemu.conf

>From the command line, I'd like to override the $_hdimage setting
in dosemu.conf.  However the following doesn't work:

    dos -I '$_hdimage = "bootdir.first /dev/hda1:ro"'

Can someone please explain the correct syntax?
