Thanks, Hans, I'll try this right away...
Bingo! That made a tremendous difference! There is still the tilde `~'
instead of the half-block used as a drop shadow, but the whole display is
much, much clearer.

Doesn't matter whether I run dos or xdos, I see the same results.
