Only by getting one of the kernels from the Freedos project=2E Our tests
have show that there are still some problems with it=2E

Which version of DOSEMU are you using=3F I=27ve just checked and
setup=2Dhdimage is aware of FreeDOS in DOSEMU=2D1=2E0=2E0 and DOSEMU=2D0=2E=

The backspace and delete keys are nontrivial business=2E
I know of at least two different ways to handle backspace and delete if
xmodmap is set like stated before=3A
1=2E The xfree86 way=3A
Backspace generates =5EH =2C delete generates DEL =28ASCII 127=29
2=2E The console and xterm=2Ddebian way=3A
Backspace generates DEL=2C delete generates ESC =5B 3 =7E
Solve problems with possibility 1=3A
Try
stty erase =5EH
Your terminfo file =28type =22infocmp=22 at the prompt=29 should have
kbs=3D=5EH=2C kdch1=3D=5C177
and there should be no relevant *VT100=2ETranslations in =22xrdb =2Dquery=
=22
The way to get possibility 2 in X=3A
stty erase =5E=3F
terminfo has
kbs=3D=5C177=2C kdch1=3D=5CE=5B3=7E
and the following in =2EXresources
*VT100=2ETranslations=3A =23override =7EShift =7ECtrl =7EMeta =5C
<Key>BackSpace=3A string=28=22=5C177=22=29=5Cn=5C

The bootdir now works=2C and in version 1=2E0=2E1 it will even work without=
a
boot=2Eblk file=2C but in my tests lredir did not work directly=2E
There are other issues with Freedos=27s command=2Ecom =28even basic stuff l=
ike
cd=2C dir and copy=29=2E Somebody else had problems with printing in the pa=
st=2E
Freedos does not use UMB=27s and the HMA=2C AFAIK; freedos uses a lot of

In an xterm=3F
On the console=3F
as xdos=3F

Subject=3A Hacking around keyboard codes =28longer=29
Hi=21
I am trying to make dosemu=27s keyboard more Polish=2Dfriendly=2E
I downloaded and applyied keyboard path for dosemu 1=2E0=2E0
=28dosemu=2D1=2E0=2E0=2Eeb1=2E21=2Epatchset=2Etar=2Egz=29
and tryied some folks under text console=2E
Looking at keymaps=2Ec i saw =22pl=22 keyboard=2E That looked good=2C but
ocurred to be unusable for me=2E =22auto=22 option worked a bit better for
me=2C as it gave me *some* code for *almost* every of my national char=27s
=28but not the right codes =2D anyway=29=2E
There are 3 maps=2E
normal =2D key_map
upper =2D shift_map
alt =28right=29 =2D alt_map
But in my language I have for example letter =22a=22 and =22A=22
both with =22=2C=22 at the bottom =28as if You joined these two characters =
into
one=29=2E
Codes I would like to have for them =28for the program that I run
inside dosemu =2D 8bit codes=29 are=3A
=22a=22 =2D 97 =2860h=29 =2D world standard
=22A=22 =2D 65 =2841h=29 =2D world standard
=22a=2C=22 =2D 134 =2886h=29 =2D local standard called Mazovia or Latin2
=22A=2C=22 =2D 143 =288fh=29 =2D same as above
So I have at least 4 cases when =22a=22 key is pressed
=2D =2D no alt=2C no shift =2D just =22a=22
=2D =2D no alt but shift =2D just =22A=22
=2D =2D alt=2C no shift =2D =22a=2C=22
=2D =2D alt and shift =2D =22A=2C=22
Add to it=2C that when CapsLock is pressed it should behave as if it
had Shift pressed=2E=2E=2E Is it possible to do such things that I need
with those =28only=29 3 maps =3F
=28Where=27s the code=2C that uses them =3F in old_serv_xlat=2Ec =3F=3F=3F =
is it
used anyway=3F so why is it called =22old=22=3F if it isn=27t used why
is it in source tree =3F=29
Uppercasing is also a problem=2C =27cause its not as simple as =2D32 for
=22normal=22 chars =2D it must be given as a table for every single char=2E
Ive got 3 standards of coding for polish chars in front of me=3A
=2D =2D Mazovia =28Latin2=29 =2D doesn=27t broke the frames and IS the stan=
dard
=2D =2D DOS 852 codepage =28don=27t like it too much=29
=2D =2D Windows 1250 =28shit=21=29
Anyway it doesn=27t really matter which of them I code in dosemu=2E
I can use any of them=2C cause my database program can change the codes
from input using recode table to internally used Mazovia =28Latin2=29
and then recode again using different table before displaying=2E
But it would be nice to have some standard kept=2E
So my question is=3A how to =3F Is it possible to have it done using
today=27s dosemu internals=2C or should I change sth significantly =3F
If yes =2D where to look=2C what to change =3F
Would You tell me more about those 3 recode tables =3F
I understand that they have 0xef=3F=3F format=2C where =3F=3F is sth=2C
that really matters=2E But how it really works =2D especially for
alt_map =3F =28maybe add alt_shift_map to defs=2C or to uppercase method =
=3F
and small change to recode proc =2D btw=3A where it is done =3F=29
The second idea is that *IF* dosemu gives proper scancodes =28those
twice 8bit=29 I would be able to use a program that changes scancodes
to the codes I need =2D as I used to use such in real DOS=2E
Would it work anyway=3F I tryied to use it under 0=2E96 dosemu and it
didn=27t work=2E
Last thought=3A I think I should be able to change what char is displayed
on the console =28via ssh or telnet to be exact=29 as chat that has code XX
=3F
It isn=27t dosemu=2Drelated ;=29 Where to change such things =3F
I would like to have normal=2C 8bit frames=2C instead of strange
=2D =2D=7C=2B=7B=7D chars when using dosemu via ssh=2E
Whoa=21 I wrote a lognish letter=2E=2E=2E Sorry ;=29
Waiting four Your words=2E

PS=3A If somebody remember =2D I asked about file locking some time ago=2E
I didn=27t forgot the topic and I am about to prepare a path that enables
dosemu to lock properly files on NetWare =28ncp=29 mounted shares

The wording here might suggest that Mazovia is another name for Latin2=2C
which is incorrect;
There are 4 standards =28=3F=29 for encoding Polish characters in 8 bits in
common use today on PCs=3A
ISO Latin=2D2 =28CP 8859=2F2=29=2C
IBM Latin=2D2 =28MS=2DDOS CP 852=29=2C
Mazovia=2C
Windows ANSI =28CP 1250=29
all of them different
=28CP 1250 is quite similar to ISO Latin=2D2=2C i=2Ee=2E 66% of codes are
identical=29=2E
Best regards=2C

O=2Ek=2E things are better then they look at first glance=2E
With dosemu=2D1=2E0=2E0=2Eeb1=2E21=2Epatchset=2Etar=2Egz all of the needed
infrastructure is in place=2E It hasn=27t been taken much advantage
of yet however=2E

Thre is also a shift =2B alt keymap=2E
Because previous to my patchset the infrastructure was not
in place to do more nothing has yet taken advantage of it=2E
You get to be first =3A=29
Currently only the de & us keymaps are have been fully converted=2E
In particular that means you will not see the 0xef combinations
in either keymap=2E What you will see is a the unicode values=2C
of the keys you want=2E This is the prefered way to handled things
now allowing you to have keymaps independant of character set encoding=2E

The translation code is in serv_xlate=2Ec old_ser_xlat=2Ec is the
implementation before the rewrite=2E The are both present to make
it simple to test for regression and bugs by just compiling the
code differently=2E

If just using the shift table is suffient then we are good here=2E

For this one I need a translation table to unicode in
src=2Fbase=2Ftranslate=2Ec =28 I don=27t have a reference for it=2E=29

Unless they actual keyboard layout is different you can do them
all with one keymap=2E
A usefull place to know about is src=2Fbase=2Ftranslate=2Fkeysym_approximat=
ions=2Ec
This has a table of approximations to use when the appriate unicode
character isn=27t in a character set=2E

shift_alt_map has already been added =3A=29
See down at the bottom in the auto case=2E
Ignore the 0xef=3F=3F case=2C it is a backwards compatibility hack=2C
=28I have taken part of the user defined range of unicode
and said it maps directly to whatever characters set you are using=29=2E
Much better is to actually use the unicode character you want=2E
Since I don=27t know for certain which character set the existing keymaps
were designed for=2C figuring out the appropriate character is difficult
and hasn=27t been done=2C except for the use & de keymaps=2E

Yes it will bug only in X with the keycode options & on the console
with the raw keyboard option=2E
It will also give you the correct scancodces via telnet etc=2E But only
if you have an appropriate map for dosemu to work backwards with=2E

This in part controlled by what external chracter set you tell dosemu you h=
ave=2E
But it is further complicated by what the current slang code for displaying
characters can do=2E
Currently dosemu cannot handle that unless you tell dosemu you terminal
is running a character set encodeing that has those chracters &
you actuallly configure you terminal to use that character set=2E
As iso8859=2D2 is most likely what your terminal is running this becomes
nontrivial=2E
Doing this better is on the todo for dosemu but it will require a
rewrite of how we display chracters on the terminal=2C and so is coming
along slowly=2E

I hope this helps=2E I am certain this doesn=27t tell you everything=2C
but hopefully this points you in the right direction=2E
Oh=2C one other thing=2E As this keymap gets written=2E I have a regresio=
n
test around for this kind of thing=2C and putting it in the regression
test so I can ensure further changes to the code will not break
your keyboard would be a real help=2E

AFAIK the Enhanced RTC =28compiletime option=29 gives you up to 8192Hz =2D
From Documentation=2FConfigure=2Ehelp=3A <BLOCKQOUTE>

Maybe =2Fdev=2Flp0 instead of =2Fdev=2Flp1 works better=2E The =2Fdev=2Flp=

changed from Linux kernel 2=2E0 to 2=2E2=2C AFAIK=2C and now =2Fdev=2Flp0 p=

It=27s DOS=2DC =22FreeDOS=22 that is limited here=2E
The support for CD=27s wasn=27t available when we released version 1=2E0=2E
So you need a new version of DOS=2E
Either FreeDOS or one you already have=2E
<FYI>
FreeDOS has been doing a tremendous job of stabalize and
becoming useful lately however it is still seems to be the buggiest
DOS out there=2E

You may find that DOSEMU can=27t lock the printer device =28=2Fdev=2Flp1=29=
because
your print spooler has the device open=2E Try disabling the printing system

well let's try the most crude and idiotic way of interpreting this
statement...
in dos, how does one "run" programs? by typing the name at the command
prompt...
IE: look for share.exe
comes with dos 6.22 , or wfwg-3.11, or possibly one or more of the major
win-3.11 office apps, I don't recall which, but one or more of the usual
apps always wanted it running from autoexec and placed it there as part of
it's install.
BTW: I don't know if running share has any bearing on _this_ sharing/locking
problem, I just know what "running share" means in a dos context.

Subject: Re: Pipe? into dosemu program.
Thank you... but it's not working.
Using 'keystroke' is not going to work for me because 1) the pesky
program
*does* in fact clear the keyboard buffer, and 2) i cannot be sure how
long
the program will run before it begins looking for that "\r". So I'm
back
to the pipe idea. Except that when I try running a loop of "echo -ne
'\r'"
and pipe this into dosemu I get the following error:
ERROR: slang_keyb_init(): Couldn't tcgetattr(kbd_fd,...) errno=22
Any idea what this is? But more importantly, any idea about how to get
beyond this?

Subject: Re: Pipe? into dosemu program.
Ok, I got passed the slang_keyb_init() problem by setting TERM=dumb
and -I "video {none}". But now it does not seem to respond to "Enter"
either by pipe or keyboard. For that matter it does not respond to
*anything* from either a pipe or the keyboard.
I have for the moment solved things with this script (but I'm really
not happy with it):
#!/bin/bash
export TERM=dumb
export Pid=$$
export RptFile=/var/lib/dosemu/bootdir/tran.rpt
export TimeOut=90
( echo $$ $Pid > /tmp/$Pid
while [ /tmp/$Pid -nt $RptFile ]
do sleep 1
done
N=$TimeOut
while ps axlww | egrep '/usr/bin/(dos) ' | grep -l " $Pid " 2>&1
>/dev/null
do # send "Return"
echo -ne '\r'
sleep 1
# check timeout
let N=$N-1
if [ $N -lt 1 ]
then # give up, get nasty
kPid=`ps axlww | egrep '/usr/bin/(dos) ' | awk
"\\$4==$Pid{print \\$3}"`
kill $kPid
fi
done
) |
/usr/bin/dos -I 'video {none}'

No, i'm not running 'share'. Thanks to Brian White, that explained me

I've made a test: I started to add data to a file and read this file,
add and read, add and read, very quickly. Sometimes, the data isn't
written to file!!! It's like.... the data disapear!!!!
Any clue?
Thanks in advance.

You are asking for a simple and standard configuration. There is nothing
special about Windows 95 partitions.

Subject: problem with ATI card
Hi
I have ATI 3d pro turbo (Rage 2 chipset) and I can't get dosemu to work.
If I enable graphics in the console ( graphics(1) in dosemu.conf), it
tries to switch to graphics mode and just hangs. The debug output shows:
PORTw: b8ee not available for read
(this line is repeated many times). What can I do to get it to work?
xdos works, but it is awefully slow and when I run an old DOS game, the
colors are all messed up (I heard that happens if the game uses 4 bit
color - is that right?)
So, if anybody could help me I'd greatly appreciate it.
thanks,
Eugene

Subject: Help with cobol files...
Hello,
I use Red-Hat linux as file server with samba in a windows network.
The aplication that uses the files was made for DOS, and therefore,
my computers run windows. This functions very well.
It is necessary to execute this aplication in the server, and for this
I use the DOSEMU. It happens that frequently the dosemu corrupts the
files. Did anybody see this before ? What should I do ?
OBS1. The files are indexed COBOL
obs2. The windows doesn't corrupt the files.
Thanks for all and
Sorry my bad english

Subject: Best DOS for 132-col character mode (VGA mode 33h)?
Hello folks,
I rely on an indispensable DOS application named Framework IV,
from the late great Ashton-Tate. I can run this application just
fine in character mode at a resolution of 132 x 43 in a window
under the OS/2 4.0 Workplace Shell. I guess IBM built support for
this video mode into the "embedded" DOS included with OS/2.
However, the display under plain old MS-DOS 6.2 "wraps" at 80
cols, jumbling things like a Cubist painting. Naturally, the same
happens with DOSEmu on Linux, whether in a console or in X.
Microsoft did *not* build in support for 132-col mode, it seems.
I'm assuming that I need a better DOS--maybe IBM DOS, or Caldera
DOS?--to obtain support for this VGA character mode (which I
think is 33h) when using DOSEmu. My questions:
a) any suggestions about which DOS to buy, if any?
b) even if I found a DOS that supports this mode, will the
132-col mode also work under DOSEmu and X?
Thanks much,
Tom Davey

Are these files modified from many sessions simultaneously?
If yes, it may be file/record locking problem: both dosemu
and samba have some methods to signal the locking, but if
these methods are different, one does not see locks of the
another. I do not know samba, but I needed to fix mars for
the same reason (lack of locking common for mars & dosemu).
It is also possible to have problems with file open modes.

Try demo of PTS-DOS 2000 or DR DOS 7.03 (the second is free for
DosEmu), they recognize 132-column mode; I am not sure if DosEmu
recognizes it correctly, but at least passes to these DOS-es the
info that the display is 132-col if set by stty (MSDOS sets 80).

Subject: Lredir and sharing files
Hi,
at first sorry for my English... I'll try to describe my big problem:
The story began when I decided to change all the software to the Open
Source stuff in our company when it's possible. So I killed Novell and
started to use Samba (for some reason I can't use mars nwe - it lacks
some features which novell supports - like semaphores).
There is one big dos accounting application which we depend on. It uses
.dbf files shared. For some time I used it with dosemu and native
vlm client and everything was OK. Now I can see
THERE IS A BIG PROBLEM WITH SHARING FILES ON LREDIRED DRIVE
It looks like something is wrong - on lredired drive the file / record
locking do not work correctly - it was mentioned here several times
before. I was searching archives for some solution but unsuccesfully.
I tried several combinations of sharing files:
1) Place all shared files in dosemu partition and accessing our
application by telnet and multiply running dosemu processes
... wrong, even impossible (of course) - it results just with
corrupted FAT when writing files concurently. It's clear why -
dos filesystem code just don't know about the other running
dosemu...
2) Connect to samba server with ncpfs and lredir drive
... as I mentioned before, lredired drive looks like network
drive for dos, but file/record locking is not correctly handled
maybe in lredir code, maybe just in linux, I don't know...
3) Connect to samba server with native client
... there is a problem with the dosemu emulated packet driver,
which is (probably) not supported in lanmanager client for dos.
I don't know if such behaviour of lredir is just a bug, or
if it's impossible to achieve correct locking that way.
Unfortunatelly dosemu emulates the packet driver, if there was
the possibility to emulate some well-supported lan card (like
ne200), it would be easy to use the most of dos lan software
including lanmanager client.
Maybe someone knows the sollution for me?
If not, I will try to hack the dosemu code (I'm not saying
that I think it will be easy for me, but I want to try).
What looks like easier task, to emulate ne2000 card, or
to hack the lredir code?
Many thanks in advance
Michal Samek

Subject: Intel 8086 linker (link86) and dosemu.
Hej all,
I have just joined this list, so forgive me if this has already been
asked. (I have had look around in old correspondance and also the
manuals/howtos, but didn't find anything.)
I have installed dosemu 1.0.0 just a few days ago and it is running very
nice :-). I need to run an old Intel compiler (plm86) and assembler
(asm86) for the 8086 seires processors. The compiler and assembler work
fine on dosemu, but when I am going to link (using the Intel link86) I get
a strange message, see below. The programs are running on DOS using an
open system interface program called run.com.
I have been running this compiler/linker on a very old Microport Unix
v4.0 (similar to Interactive Unix) using DOS-Merge.
I hope someone has an idea of what this means.
Greetings,
Leif
