Do you have encrypted passwords turned on on?  Win98 (and NT with service
pack 3) default to only using encrypted passwords - you need to either
turn on encrypted passwords on the Samba box, or put an entry into your
registry on the '98 box to do unencrypted passwords.  Check the docs on
Samba - the registry stuff and the docs on setting up Samba to use
encrypted passwords are available there (along with lots of other
helpful info...)
