More a case of which ones to avoid, they are:
NE2000 isa/pci clones 
ISA pnp that can't be put into jumperless mode

Ones I have used and have worked well are:

wd8013's cheap from computer fairs, solid driver, labled jumpers
3com 509 Good board if set to jumperless
SMC etherpower II for 30UKP I paid has served very well 
(apart from  quake1/2 which it doesn't like)

And then the normal requimentation of DEC tulip but then I guess everybody
knows about them, but they are a bastard to find in the UK
