Dont feel bad.  Its not a stupid question.

You will need to obtain a sendmail configuration file that
does NOT have support for BIND or use of outside nameservers.

When you install a distro, such as slakware, around the end
of the install it askes if you are connected to the internet 
by way of a nameserver and allows for you to set options for your sendmail
at that time.

If it is already installed, then you'll have to obtain a sendmail config
file that works without BIND support
