I've done all of the above. The best response I ever had was the mt retention. The tape drive works perfectly in Win95 with NovaStor which makes NovaBack. Central Point Software in Windows 3.x also noticed and used the same tape drive. So, nothing is wrong with the hardware, just the software. I keep getting an I/O conflict because Linux repeatedly try's to use two I/O port address. I was told there is a bug and no further development was adapted to the software.
