Sherine,

you should check if the messages are really being stored at the
/var/spool/mail/user file.  Pine should work, since it doesn't use the pop3
server.  For the pop3 server, try to run "telnet locahost 110" and see if
you get any message like "+POP3 Ready".

If you don't, check in the /var/log/secure and /var/log/messages file if
you see any errors.
