This is after the fact apparently (from your email) but you might want
to try "sudo" in the future to accomplish your access.

Otherwise, I'm not sure there is a conventional way to fix your problem
at the moment unless you crack your machine (which is fun... ). Depending
on your OS version ya might want to check the popular crack sites.
This would give you the excuse to secure your machine at the same time.
I've done it before. :)

If you were running Solaris, the password would be :  bufferoverflow   :)

The problem is not gaining root access at all. The problem is gaining root
access via telnet. If I go to the console of the machine it will not be
any problem to login from the console and revalidate the root password.
