In my own personal experience with connecting computers, use a hub. A
simple cross-over cable is a LOT more trouble that it's really worth. Spend
the extra $15 or so bucks and buy a cheapie hub from OnSale or Surplus
Auction. With a hub, on power on your NIC makes a connection to the hub and
is locked in and thinks is "has a connection". WHen you just boot a
crossover cable, if the other computer you have is not on, you can get a
bunch of connection problems. Just my two cents on this problem, but I
think it's the best long-term solution.

I'm trying to get a Win95 machine to communicate with my Linux box.
I have a NIC installed in each and a crossover RJ-45 cable. I've filled
in the IP and other info with made up numbers. Ultimately, I'd like to
connect via XDMCP using a XWindows emulator on the 95 machine
(ReflectionsX). I fire up init 5 and the Linux box seems to be
broadcasting but I can't be sure. Any ideas, advice, assistance with be
much appreciated.
