Hi you all!

I hope this mail gets there. I am not subscribed to this list (I am
however subscribed to several other LINUX lists such as linux-prog,
etc.) and I only got this address thru some website!

At home I have 5 PCs:
-1- PII-350/64 running both RedHat 5.1 and Win98
-2- PII-333/128 running only Win98
-3- PII-300/64 running only Win98
-4- 486-100/8 running only RedHat 5.1
-5- 386-16/2 :) running only MS-DOS 6.20 (and my Borland Pascal 7 :-)
I number them for easy reference.

We (= my brother and I) have TCP/IP network between the first 3, and
we will soon include -4-, as a gateway server to the internet, some
harddisks, and a printer.

This network of ours has been set up using the standard Win9x tools (=
Network in the Confuiguration Panel), we use only a TCP/IP protocol,
and "Client for Microsoft Networks" as only client.

Our network cards are all NE2000 compatible (or so they say :)

THE PROBLEM:
Lately I always boot PC -1- in LINUX. But then I don't have access to
our local home network! I have been trying stuff with netconf (part of
linuxconf), with only bad results! My system now takes more than half
an hour to boot (and this is the -1-!). That is just because it pauses
while trying to start the SMB. It just hangs there doing nothing for
half an hour, then it continues the booting secuence. I guess I did
something wrong it my config, assigned a wrong server or something.

HERE'S WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO:
I would like to have access to the (Win98 based) TCP/IP network we
have. I would like to be able to share directories with those
Win98-only machines, if that is possible. I would like to use the
shared directories on those machines. I want to be able to telnet from
some Win98 machine in my network to my LINUX machine. Now I am not
even able to ping them!

BUT! None of the systems is always on! (-4- soon will take on that
task :), so if the LINUX PC is the only one booted, it has to be able
to work as a stand-alone LINUX machine as it does now. Thus it is not
a constant network. I am mentioning this because I think that most
files on this matter handle the setting up of a real client-server
constant network! That is not the case here!

QUESTION:
Could you please give me as many info as possible. I would like very
short steps: first, then.. if this is the case, do that...
I am especially interested in what I do NOT have to configure (e.g. I
don't think I need to include Router information,...) If I would
really NEED a network server to do all this (<> Windoze9x), I would
like to use -1- as server then as well (until -4- will replace it then)

I am not a complete dummy or anything, I understand quite a lot, but
the more detailed, the better :)

TIA,
- Tim Aerts (Out-4-Fun.com)
