I have had very good luck with an AmJet modem from www.carlind.com.  This 
particular modem is a clone of the USR sportster (uses the TI chipset),
and last I checked (call them to be sure), it had jumper overide or PNP
mode.  It is not a LossModem, and is only $48USD.
