Mark,

since you are using tcp_wrappers (tcpd), you might have rules that are
prohibting the connection.

Check you /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow files.  Maybe you have a
rule saying that you only allow conections from "localhost" (127.0.0.1).

If conections from other hosts are really being denied, you should see
errors in /var/log/secure.

Try putting "in.telnetd: ALL" in your /etc/hosts.allow file.

I'm using Red Hat, so I don't know if these files are located at the same
place in your slackware.  There're man entries for hosts.allow and
hosts.deny, take a look.
