There is a HOWTO that explains how to recover data from an ext2fs
filesystem.
You can use the tools debugfs & dumpe2fs to manually fix a filesystem.

I haven't been in a position yet where I needed to do this myself, and it
does
look rather daunting but it should be possible if you have a firm enough
grasp
of the filesystem layout.
