Hi,

You don't need any compilation.  Slackware 3.6 already contains the 
compiled driver for via-rhine.  You only need to add a line,
/sbin/modprobe via-rhine
in the Network device support section of /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.
Then reboot, voila, you are in the LAN (if you already setup 
the network).
