Hi,

I'm new to this list so this may have been covered before...

I have installed 5.1 on a couple of Intel machines. They are connected
to a local segment using a 3C509 NICs.

The local segment is conected by a number of routers to loads of remote
networks. The linux machines have a default route of the main router
(which learns all of the routes OK).

The problem I'm observing is that if you telnet/FTP from the local
segment the daemons wake immediately and you get a login: or name:
prompt in under half a second.

If you telnet or FTP from a remote network the login: or name: prompt
takes 2 minutes or more to appear.

>From the remote networks you can ping (40ms round trip for a 64k WAN
link) and use things like finger with an immediate response.

I've searched the FAQs and archives but haven't spotted anything on
this... has anyone any ideas. I have a feeling its something to do with
DNS lookups timing out but have no proof of this.

TIA

Chris
