Chris,
we've had similar problems (lock-up) with one specific machine at first,
then a second later on, when we rolled out a number (20+) of LRP-based
routers in our TR-network infrastructure.
The machine would lock up locally and remotely, i.e. you could still
switch screens, type in the login name but then it wouldn't do much more,
ssh to the machine didn't work either (no other services running apart
from snmpd), routing through the box still appeared to work, after a while
(few days) though, that also broke.
The environment is also NT-machines at both ends, heavily communicating w/
each other for some cases. Replacing the machine with another one didn't
help, a similar (eaqually loaded) machine though on another place didn't
have any problem. I tried recompiling the kernel once again, building it
from scratch, etc etc... Finally, we took another cable. Solved the
problem.
We actually took another cable because at one time we had a problem on
another network, also behind an LRP-box, that hadn't given us any problem
at all during months. A colleague of mine came to the conclusion that as
there was only a 3com switch and the router when he saw beaconing, and
switching off the router solved the problem ...
When I came in I tried measuring the length of the cable, it showed 8 m,
while it definitely had to be much much longer. So I went to the 'other
side' and did the same thing: 86 meter... All the 6 cables of that bunch
had the problem, alternatives were 112 m or so, we used them and away went
the problem.
In all cases I first suspected my part of the job, i.e. the router, to
finally come to the conclusion that it was an external factor
