You need a new sysadmin I think . He obviously doesn't know what he is talking

If you are using IP then he really doesn't know what he is talking about. If
he is using IPX then Linux will use both 802.2+SNAP and 802.3 (Novell 802.3
is btw officially a _bad_ thing and against ethernet rules and should never
ever be used on a real network). 802.2 uses 802.3 though.
You can configure what Linux uses for IPX. IP always uses DIX (Blue Book)
ethernet, as do all IP systems.
