Hello. I have the following setup 2 Linux based routers.. #1 has 5 NIC's, 4 CN100TX and one NE2000. (tulip + ne driver) #2 has one CN100TX and 1 DFE-570TX (4port) (tulip driver) #1 has about 20 virtual interfaces extra and #2 has 5 Total # of ip's are now 10 C-blocks. The problem I come across is that routes that go to #2 dissappear and reappear radomly although they are added statically when I went over to the 2.2.x series of kernels. I have a slight suspicion that this is caused in the arp code as I had problems with the default settings in 2.0.x also. In 2.0.x series the problem was that machines dropped connection for a minute and then could continue. Fixed that by increasing ARP_MAXSIZE to 4096 before compiling the kernel. However in the 2.2.x series the arp state machine is totally rewritten, and I am at a loss trying to figure out how it works. As the traffic flow trough these routers is relatively high, running an arp daemon seems not to be an attractive option.
