        Depends on how you are using it.

        If you are using Samba to validate users against the Unix password
file and your flavor of Unix only support 8 character passwords, then this
is correct.  If you are using a flavor of Unix, like Linux with PAM and
Shadow support with MD5 hashes, then no, you are not limited to 8 characters.
Same thing if you are validating against a Windows PDC or against a Samba
smbpasswd file.  Thos are not limited to 8 characters.

        So Samba, itself, is not generally limited to 8 characters.  It all
depends on the underlying authentication mechanisms.
