Or, assuming MediaOne is not going to be receptive (which would be no
great surprise), set up BIND on this machine and make it authoritative for
your domain. Now you can use your IP address and the "real" (MediaOne)
hostname as the primary nameserver for your domain. In fact, you can
register a host with InterNIC using your own hostname (www.yourdomain.com
or dns.yourdomain.com) and the IP address you have. Then the nameserver
entry will point at xxx.yourdomain.com instead of xxx.mediaone.com. If
you set up a bogus secondary, things will still work even if they're not
perfect. I'd suggest getting a friend in a similar situation to do
secondary DNS for you. I swap DNS services with a friend, we back each
other up.
If you can get somene else to host DNS for you, great. If your ISP will
do it for you for fee or a couple of bucks a month, fantastic, you're very
fortunate. If not, you can use guerilla methods to get the job done, and
done your way. I know, trust me. <grin>
