This is on a Linux box?  One thing to check, on some systems (HP-UX?), the
traditional berkeley 'rsh' is installed as 'remsh', and 'rsh' is the
restricted shell -- basically /bin/sh without the ability to access
anything outside of your path.

I don't really see how calling a restricted shell instead of rsh could
give you this set of errors, though.  As others mentioned, the error
probably comes from a bash config file error.
