You must specify on your FTP client to use the PASSIVE (PASV) command, so that
the server does not try to connect to a private IP address, which of course
will not work.

Most FTP clients have a PASV command, and some even do this by default.  When
the PASV command is sent, the FTP server will be the one to provide the
address:port combination for the client to connect to.
