I don't call /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 /etc/HOSTNAME and /etc/resolve.conf all
over the place.  (slackware example)

or even /etc/init.d/network and /etc/hostname and /etc/resolve.conf
(Debian example).

If you stored all settings in a single file, you would get the disaster
knowen as the "registry" (ie win 9x/nt).  That is one VERY important file,
that can easily get corrupted, get's very big, and is so cryptic (to keep
size down) that most people can not under stand it.
