This question may be a little out of place here. If it is, could you
please direct me as to where to send such requests?
I was wondering if there is a way to tell inetd to discard all requests
from a specific device, such as ppp0???
I am at present using IP Masquerading so that my linux box can operate
as an internet router for a small (3 computers) LAN. Both I and my
father have some concern as to the security, b/c we use telnet to
connect and administer this box. This means that telnet, and any port
that is active is visible to the outside world whenever we are
connected. Perhaps not a big risk, but a real risk all the same.
Previously we used Winroute 2.1 on a Win98 box, but due to various
problems w/ our win98 box, and our desire to experiment w/ a linux
server, we decided to set up this box as an internal HTTP and file
server. W/ Winroute, all the ports were either closed or not responding
at all. my father (and I) prefer such a mode of operation, and he is
considering going back to Win98. I hope to not have to do this.
A firewall is proably an option, but if possible, not desired. (It might
be okay if I could set it up to only block certain ports on ppp0, but
that might not work either, as it might then block those ports in the
outward direction as well).
Anyway, some advice, if possible would be greatly appreciated for this
relative newbie in Unix/Linux. TIA.
