I've seen the following problem several times and have also seen similar
reports on USENET.

Occasionally, klogd stops processing new kernel messages. dmesg always
shows that there are ipchains Packet Log messages that have not been
passed on to the system log (often there are other messages as well).
Restarting klogd restores normal logging operation but only kernel
messages generated after the restart get sent on the the log. This leads
me to believe that the missing messages were consumed by the old klogd
process.

I'm currently running 2.2.14pre4 with John Hardin's PPTP masq patch and
sysklogd 1.3.31-12 from RH6.1. I've also seen the problem on 2.2.13 with
the sysklogd from RH6.0.

If this isn't a known problem, I'll try to debug it the next time that it
occurs.
