ntpd (name of version 4) and xntpd (name of version 3) dont change the clock
if there is too much difference between the server(s) and your system. You
have to use :
ntpdate <IP adresses of your ntp servers>
then you can use xntpd or ntp to be a client AND a server
or ntpdate in a cron to be client only (if the difference is small then
ntpdate uses adjtime() instead of settimeofday()).
