ethertap

I'm using ethertap.
I build it as a module but it wouldn't insmod due to unresolved externals.
So I rebuilt the kernel with ethertap built in.
Now it works.
Does anybody know what I missed when I was using it as a module ?
I presume there's some other module that needs to be loaded first.
Also, I only seem to have tap0, no tap1 - tap15
ie. I can't ifconfig tap1
Any ideas ?
