Squid configuration

 I have compiled and configured squid 2.3 on a test  Linux box. When I run ./squid -z  
I get the message : Creating swap directories. Next when I run ./squid I get the 
message:
Squid[pid]: Squid parent:: Child process started[pid]. Then the system hangs on that 
line.
Can I get any lead on what I am missing to make it work?
