For most cards+drivers use 'mii-diag', available at

Putting the selection in 'ifconfig' works if you support only a few cards,
e.g. Sparcs, but it is not a general solution.

Does '100baseTx' mean
  - Use the 100baseTx SYM transceiver.
  - Use the 100baseTx MII transceiver (some cards have both).
Combined with
  - Force 100baseTx, turn off autonegotiation
  - Advertise 100baseTx, half duplex (HDX) only.
  - Advertise 100baseTx, both HDX+FDX.

And don't forget negotiated hardware flow control.  What about 100baseT4?
And...

It's best to stick to the MII industry standard, which has proven its
usefulness by its almost complete adoption in just a few years.
