Hello,

I have a problem that probably has a simple solution but I'm just learning linux, so I
hope somoeone will take the time to help me out.

I am trying to connect a computer running redhat linux 6.2 to a network. I am
presuming that the network, card is ok, linux thinks so and I will believe it until I
have exhausted the other avenues of inquiry. I ran netcfg, the redhat network
configuration utility, and filled in all the details I could, these were my IP
address, my hostname, Domain, Gateway/Router, Subnet Mask, and 3 Domain name server
IPs. What was missing in the end was: in the protocol column for the devices eth0 and
loopback, the entry was none. I thought maybe it should be static for eth0 (my network
card), but that wasn't an option. Also in the Routing section I was not able to fill
in the default gateway device (?) nor was I able to fill in any Interface, Network
address (?), Netmask or gateway.

There are some other symptoms to this problem, which may help:
After asking netconf to implement changes (while trying to find a configuration that
worked) it gave two errors:

1) when executing /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S10network there was an error message:
invalid destination mit.edu for line 0 in file /etc/conf.routes
now mit.edu was filled in as the domain, but nothing else, and secondly there is no
file /etc/conf.routes

2) when executing /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S85httpd: Syntax error on line 373 of
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf ScriptAlias takes two arguments, a fakename and a realname.
> FAILED

now line 373 of that file reads as follows:
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "/home/httpd/cgi-bin/""

I don't know if either of these two messages are of any help in finding the source of
the problem, but any help would be much appreciated,

thanks,

Aengus.
