using Linux on a 486 you can build quite an accptable mail server for not
a lot of $$$.
If you have low quality phone lines it may be worth looking at using UUCP
as the transfer mechanisem. It works quite well in an environment where
full time connectivity is not generaly available.
For mail reading you sould be able to find a number of older email readers
that will work on smaller systems. Take a look at Pine.
