don't look now, but i'm on a ppp conncection.

i think my biggest mistake was to try to use the PPP HOWTO.  that thing
definitely needs to be rewritten, made much shorter, and dumbed down for
the audience that needs it the most.  it hurt more than it helped.

i finally managed to get the connection by using the network configure
thing which the HOWTO said it wouldn't go into.  it was straight forward
and shocked the h*ll out of me when it worked on the first try in under 2
minutes.

i just solved a 3 day thorn in my side in under 2 minutes.

with the 3com card you should be able to diable pnp look at the disk that
came with it, if you didnt get one call them and tell them you need that

No haven't tried anything with modules yet :)
I;'m quite happy it's now working with the standard stuff - I'll put

I changed from having a rule for localnet traffic to be masqed, to
having a point-to-point rule for each workstation. thqat worked, for
some reason or other. A bit kludgy, but well....

In Linux (RedHat distribution) the rc.local in /etc/rc.d directory
is usually where you add any local "autoexec" type features you want
to start at boot time. rc.local is run by "root" so you need to be aware
of this if you want to run a application or util as another user.

So to load and run your advansys module, simply add the following line.

/sbin/insmod advansys



If you wish to have a program run under the username of another user
(like I run my fetchmail command at boot) do as follows:

su - gmkelly -c 'fetchmail' &

To automatically add a filesystem on booting simple add the following
to your /etc/fstab (file system table)

Thanks.  I went to the site you listed and printed it out.

Two problems:

1)  My directory structure is a little different from the one you
listed...There is no "drivers" directory.  I have
/usr/src/linux/include/net.

2)  When I try to compile...the `make config' command generates the
following error:
 make: *** No rule to make target `config'. Stop.

I have 2 Linux computers connected via ethernet cards. The network does
work properly, I know that since there is no problems when trying to
access the webserver on the other computer.
But, when trying to Telnet the other computer I never get any respons.
The server times out or something. Very annoying. When Telneting a
server on the Internet or whatever I always expect a login prompt and so
I did this time too but it never showed up.
The rlogin does almost the same... which means it give no reply at all.
What is wrong?

I am running SuSE 5.3 and am Using the kppp package to connect to the
internet, (works on my Red-Hat box just fine)  this is a clean install
of Suse .  When I try to dial, it dials out , connects then gives me
error message "pppd Deamon died unexpectedly"  I am connecting to an NT
server (it's what my ISP uses) so I set it for chap authentication.
like I said, it works great on my Red Hat box, but my Suse box just sits
here

I compiled new kernel (2.1.131)l, everything was ok but ifconfig stopped
to work(to add ip aliases).After compiling new net-tools this
problem was partly solved : i can add aliases manually after
boot, nut they aren't added automaticlly during the boot.
Kernel is compiled with ip aliasing support and with network
devices aliasing also (build into kernel).
Also during boot i get error : "No Kernel Support For Devices
aliasing", while there is.

I am running rh5.2. i tried to configure ip aliases with linuxconf
and with redhat's network configuration tool, and with ifconfig

Try the driver off the driver disk that came with the card or can be
downloaded off of their web site.  I have that card on a Slackware box running
2.0.30 with apache and 3 virtual hosts.  I just copied the tulip.c over the
existing on in /drivers/net .  You can call Netgear and ask them if you have
trouble.  I have all Netgear networking gear (cards, hubs, router) and have
called them a couple times and each time they have been great.

Subject: pcmcia network card and a modem coexisting

If the modem is in in the pcmcia slot, it is recognized as a modem and I can
dial out using kpppd (although I can't get the connection to work yet).

If the network card is installed (linksys etherfast) it worked great.  I
connect to my internet service through the school's network, it configures
dhcp and no problem.

If both cards are in the slot, I get an error: irq conflict: resource in use.
The lights on the network card's cable come on, but do not flash, indicating
network traffic.  It doesn't get connected.

I think the problem is that the computer can't figure out which device to use
to connect to the Internet.  Is there a good way around this.  I would like
to simultaneously be connected to the internet through the network card and
connect to a tcp/ip local area network through the modem.

Any ideas?

Yes because anyone not using your dns server will not be able to find that site
unless they type in the IP address for it.

I had a 3com isa card in one of my linux box and I had to turn off the plug and
pray support and set the card for media type (RJ 45 ) , IRQ, etc .  After I did
that it worked.

I use comtrol rocket port cards and they are 'very' stable under linux.  I use it
under slackware linux 2.0.3x (x meaning any .30 version).  The oem price is high,
about 300 for a 4 port.  I looked on their reseller page and got my 4 port for 219
with shipping.  I have been very happy with the card been using it for over a
year.  Their web page is www.comtrol.com   .  They have a big variety, Intelligent

        I've spent the good part of the day trying to figure out each
of these upgrade problems in turn, but I seem to be getting nowhere,
so it's time to once again humbly call upon everyone *else's*
experience, I guess. . .

        I upgraded to 2.1.131 today, finally.  I tried last weekend
and realized the hard way that yes, the versions of libc, mount, GCC,
etc., *do* make a difference, and that I should read the Changes file
immediately every time I do an upgrade. :) I quickly realized,
however, that two things were broken -- my NFS-on-root box, and the
masquerading system I use to let said box access the net.

        With the first problem, I've made absolutely no headway.  When
the NFS box (foundling, 192.168.1.2) boots into 2.1, everything works
fine until the rc.S script runs and hits the mount -a.  When it does,
it gives the following error for every entry in the fstab:

RPC: sendmsg returned error 101
RPC: sendmsg returned error 101
RPC: sendmsg returned error 101
RPC: sendmsg returned error 101
portmap: server localhost not responding, timed out
          [Repeat those five lines three times in sequence]
lockd_up: no pid, 10 users??

(the 'users' number increments by one with each filesystem mounted)

        If I go away and read a book for a while, once all the
timeouts are done, the filesystems are all actually mounted, and work
fine.  I've tried such things as running rpc.mountd and
rpc.mountd/rpc.nfsd (on foundling, since it complains about 'server
localhost'), as well as rpc.kmountd/rpc.knfsd, but neither has any
effect; in fact, one of those combinations (I forget which) froze the
machine on the spot.

(Incidentally, if I boot from my rescue disk and try NFS-mounting, the
same happens, unless I run portmap first.)

        The second problem is perhaps the more important one, as it
greatly limits the machine's use instead of simply slowing it down.
Masquerading has ceased to work using ipfwadm (as the Changes file
explains), and I cannot get ipchains to work correctly.  I am using
the ipchains commands from another recent post in this newsgroup,
altered to match my network address -- I wouldn't be adding to the
spam if I hadn't done a little research first. :)

ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0

        Actually, I'm not entirely sure that this is a masquerading
problem at all; I've just been assuming that, since that's the thing I
see has changed the most in 2.1, from my standpoint.  To be more
specific:

- - If foundling tries to talk to furball (the NFS server and gateway,
192.168.1.1), success.

- - If foundling tries to talk to the outside world, failure; more
specifically, a traceroute times out on the *first* hop -- it doesn't
seem to recognize that furball (which it *can* contact) is the first
hop in its trip, as it always is.

- - Foundling's routing tables are the same as they've been since before
the upgrade:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    Use Iface
localnet        *               255.255.255.0   U     0      0        0 eth0
default         furball         0.0.0.0         UG    0      0        0 eth0

        Net-tools *have* been upgraded, along with everything else the
Changes file asks for, and so I've reached the point where I fail to
see exactly what my stupid error is *this* time. :)  Any help would be

I just set up MkLinux on my mac.  Works great.  The problem I'm having

I can get out to any machine on the network from the Linux box.  I can't

ping or telnet into the linux box. I've vhecked all IP info and it seems
right.

If you post the output of ifconfig and route -n, and more details
about the network number/netmask of your network, and the output
of 'ping {any.address.on.net}', then people might be able to help.
Also check to see if the little green light on your net card lights up.
