Yes. I use a 486/33 with 16 to do a 640K/272K connection. I used a
386/40 with 8 before that. The biggest performence change I saw was in
logins. I rolled my own router software from a slackware 3.4
distribution.

I am in the process of scraping a 486 together that will eventually
become my first server.

I have to start learning this somewhere.

If a NIC or SCSI card is UNIX compatible, does that mean it will work
with Linux?

What is the difference between Unix and Linux? Xwindows and Linux?

Please, be easy on me!

        Hello,

I will be very grateful to anyone who can shed light on this
networking problem:

My networking setup "works" perfectly except when I ping anything,
every other packet is a DUP! . Also, the "collision" counter, as
reported by ifconfig seems to increment at an alarming rate. This is
very definitely affecting the performance of my server.

I'm on my third NIC card & driver, and the problem remains constant.
I've exhasted all ifconfig and routing problems that I can think of.

There's no documentation I can find on solving problems like this.
Does this sound familiar to anyone ??

Thanks thanks thanks for any help!!

- Linux: 2.0.35
- current NIC card: Realtek 8029 (same problem with another ne2000
card, and a TULIP card as well)
- other machines on our network do not exhibit this behaviour
- IP aliasing , with 4 virtual interfaces set up (and working)

This is definitly true.
They say a windows user does not need to know about this.

Thank you very much, this solves the first problem.
I have to say that it is _not_ gmx that we are talking about.

The second problem is that the login server expects an Windows client.
After my pppd(V2.3.4) gets the local and remote IPs, he receives
"echo reqs" every 10 Secs. I assume that the remote machine wants to
tell my machine about the nameservers now, correct ??
After about 60 Secs the Connection is terminated by the remote machine.
Because my pppd does not answer in the right form, I think.

ezppp - seems to have "issues" with some window managers. I've noticed the
same problem with a few other programs.

changing window managers to one other then fvwm seems to help

Thats Why i quit using it. check out x-isp or some of the other ppphelper

I've been trying to set up my new linux thru my win98 direcpc. No
luck. I can ping the win98 machine, connect with samba but can't get
out through the NAT I have set up in the win98. I think that it is a
configuration problem. Does anyone know how to set this up? What is
my domain? and things like that. Thanks.

Leafnode will provide a small news server that fetches from an
upstream server without needing a feed. If you have more than about 10
users I wouldn't recomend it. leafnode is at
http://wpxx02.toxi.uni-wuerzburg.de/~krasel/leafnode.html

There is also an nntp cacheing proxy. I've never tried it out. It's at
http://www.infosys.tuwien.ac.at/NewsCache/

Both of these will probably need tcp wrappers to restrict access to
the machines inside the proxy server.

In de.comp.os.unix.linux.newusers Marcus Pfohl wrote that it isn't.
He also told me that leafnode is not the very best choice for a company-wide
newssystem, anyway (for security reasons and its poor mechanisms to restrict
news-access).
So I think, I'll try out INN.

I hope I'll have as much luck as I had with leafnode (which was very easy to
configure).

Thanks a lot!

Well, you may find multiple account support in the newest version of
Pine. Seems to me like I've read something about it but I don't
recall exactly what.

Fetchmail can be configured to bring down mail from multiple
accounts. Then you can use procmail to sort the mail once it
arrives, if necessary. I use this method plus nmh (the basis of exmh)
for my own purposes.

I'm using Sygate on Win98, no problems to speak of. (The
alt.satellite.direcpc group is full of people who don't like what they
characterize as a bait-and-switch by Hughes, but that's another story.)

The whole point of NAT (as opposed to a proxy!) is that you should be able
to give the DPC box's ethernet card as your gateway address and it should
just WORK. In my case, the DPC box is using the local address 172.16.0.1,
so that's the address I give as "gateway" in my other computers. For linux,
that's "route add default gw 172.16.0.1" Literally nothing else to it.

That's Helius with a "u", and when I tried it, it didn't detect the Hughes
PCI card. Or maybe it was the incredibly overengineered license software
that refused to work? Impossible to debug and they didn't seem too
interested in earning my $200. Tried their NT software as well.

Anyway, much as I'd like to put Linux back on the machine with the DPC card,
I'm not holding my breath.

Does anyone know of a way that the configuration file can change on it's
