Both of you should run TCPDUMP with the "-s 1500" and "-x" flags so that
you can see the entire IP & TCP headers of the SYN segments. Do this to
a "good" host and to the "bad" host. Maybe the NATs are putting
funky/bad options in the IP or TCP headers. That could cause them to get
discarded (although it shouldn't).

Subject: IBM PS/2 (microchannel crap) PPP
Date: Fri, 01 Jan 1999 06:29:58 GMT
Hello,
I am trying to run SlackWare 3.5 on an IBM PS/2, it took a lot of work to even
get it to boot right. Currently I have to boot off a disk with the ibmmca.s
kernel image copied to it. I used pppsetup to setup everything, and double
checked the settings with my other slackware system, they were the same and
useing the same modem on the same port on the same phone line. When I did
ppp-go it connected, then disconnected. I check /var/log/messages to see whats
up and it showed that I had connected, gotten an IP, then it said:
<date here> localhost pppd[142] Modem hangup
So I gave minicom a try, I would connect just fine, then alt+q out of it with
out reseting the connection, and as soon as i started pppd it would disconnect.
So I tried DIP, that didn't work either. I'm out of ideas, and don't have
a clue how I'm going to get a ppp connection out of this thing. Please Help.
Nate Donnay
PS. I forgot to mention the ibmmca.s kernel does ppp support in it, so i don't
think thats the problem.

I endorse this sentiment. I frequently reply to questions by
E-mail only to subsequently receive an " undeliverable " message,
even though I try to decipher a "proper" E-mail address.
This is extremely irritating. I now commonly do not bother
to help a poster who does not provide a "proper" E-mail
address. Oftentimes, the question is of the " been- asked- a-
thousand- times- already " variety.

Yes! You can.
Connect the "modem" to the 3com 10/100 card (or any other card for that
matter) provided by USWorst.
Make sure you have dhcpd (from redhat or hack it for other Linuxes) to get
your ip via dhcp.
Compile a kernel to support ip masqerade (sunsite.unc.edu for Linux Doc.
project) and viola, blazing access all aorund the house! You can even
manioulate DNS to do some very cool (underhanded even) stuff for you.

Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 16:35:19 +0100
I've just successfully installed RedHat 5.2 on a Sun Sparcstation in which
there is a QuadEthernet network card.
Since Sun puts a unique Ethernet address into the station firmware, after
the boot sequence every network interface has the same address.
In Solaris the ifconfig command allows to change the network interface MAC
address. It seems not the same in Linux. How can I do ?
Any help is greatily appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Or get a current pppd and use its built-in demand dialing. I tried to
compile diald several times and never quite got it to compile, let alone
run! But pppd demand-dialling worked for me right away.
http://www.nic.com/~cannon/Linux/ has tips on both pppd on demand and IP
masq -- it's not meant to replace the official HOW-TO. I just tried to
clear away some of the options that make the process more complicated than
it needs to be (for MOST of us).

Indeed. I'm inclined to think there's something sheep-like in the way
people have attached themselves to the `munge addresses' movement.

Subject: pppd & Defender Authentication - Help
Date: Fri, 01 Jan 1999 10:33:14 GMT
I'm trying to establish a dial-up connection to my employers intranet
via their ppp dial-in service. The difficulty is figuring out how to
deal with their added authentication system. They use a Defender key
system. Basically, after logging in with a username and password, I'm
prompted with a number which I then enter into a calculator like
device (Defender) to retrieve a number which I must enter. Then the
ppp connection completes.
What I've described works fine under Win, but I have no clue how to
set this up under Linux, since I can't automate it with Chat.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

You need to make a "bin" directory just below your chroot and copy "ls"
there.

Subject: "EZ Card" PCI driver?
Date: Fri, 01 Jan 1999 03:09:12 +0100
After spending the last two days sifting through the HOWTO, FAQ's etc.
and not finding what I needed, I thought I'd pose the question here.
Has anyone has ever used an SMC NIC named "EZ Card 10/100" with linux?
This is my first time setting up an ethernet interface with linux, so
I'm not entirely sure if I'm on the right path here. There doesn't
appear to be any specific driver module for my card -- there are other
SMC drivers with the snappy "EZ" name in them, but they are ISA/16bit
and not what I need. So I thought that maybe it was a generic chip which
SMC repackaged (ie DEC/Tulip), but I'm not sure how to tell if linux can
see the card. Is there a quick procedure to test if a given driver can
talk to your card?
Thx,
Mike.

Do they appear in /proc/filesystems? If not, can you load the
relevant modules? If no to both, you do not have support for those
filesystems.

Hi everyone.
I have just bought pair of D-Link DFE-530TX 10/100 Adaptor cards.
I thought that D-Link would be ok, as there are several drivers
for their other cards in the kernel distribution. But I tried all
of those, and none can detect my card. Then I tried compiling a
kernel with all the PCI ethernet drivers, and letting them probe
for it. But no luck.
I have tried sending a msg to D-Links's `Free Lifetime
customer support', but so far no reply.
The two biggest chips on the board are labeled DL10030 and DM9101
respectivly.
Where can I find a driver which will work with these cards?

Would you happen to be using kernel ver >2.1.100 ?
If so, yes, smbmount DOES NOT work with the newer development kernels.
Especially with latest RH distributions the sources (of smbmount)
can't compile and it is a known problem.
There is the package know as SHARITY that solves the problem but it is
not free ;
it is given (with sources) as a cut down version. However free
versions are
supplied to students.
