Date: 5 Jan 1999 18:18:48 GMT

I have a 3com 3c509tp card. It was detected during install and I was able
to configure the NIC. It worked fine and BootP was running with TCP/IP
protocol.

I installed a SoundBlaster Pro and the NIC stopped working. Linux will not
detect the card during bootup and ifconfig doesn't allow me to add the NIC.

Does anybody know how to re-detect a NIC like the installation does?
Linuxconf still has the same settings as before and have not changed. I
have tried removing the sound card and re-booting but it still doesn't
work.

I am stumped... I have tried to manually add the irq and io in linuxconf to
the card's orginal settings.

Subject: Diald problem
Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 11:27:18 +0100

Hello,

I'm trying to set diald, so that it establish PPP connection to ISP when
someone in intranet need it and hang up when connection is idled.
I've a strange problem: Diald starts dialing approx. every 3 min, even
if nobody requesting URLs from Internet. From debug information I've
found out that diald accepting packets addressed to ISP DNS server.
I can't figure out what process is sending these packets! They come
from my IP number and the port number increases by 2 each time (starting
with 1050), i.e. every next packet, which caused diald to initiate the
connection come from different port. The port number already reached
1600!

I'm running SOCKS on the Linux box, can that be a problem?
Does anyone knows how to make diald to ignore these packets?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Nickolai

You might like to consider upgrading to Version 2 of Samba. There is a Beta
V3 out now and it comes with a working version of the Samba Web admin tool,
(SWAT). This seems to make it quite easy to set up the Linux box as a
preferred master and local master browser.

Why? what is going wrong?

How can I install SAINT? PLEASE HELP.

You can retrieve the latest kernel at
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/

i think 2.0.36 is the latest stable kernel, unless your interested in
running a development kernel.

The Linux Documentation Project is a great place to get howto's. Here
is the link for kernel compilation:

Happy hacking!

If you are sure you are connected, run ifconfig to see what you get. If you
have the PPP config displayed, then you have an active PPP link going. Just
make sure you are really connected to the ISP. Also, make sure you have
your ISPs DNS listed in the netcfg dialog. If you don't know the DNS, call
your ISP and look for it. You may need to set up a route to that IP.

do a 'man route' to see which switches and options in that command will help
in your situation. If you have the route set up, and you are really
connected, and your ISPs DNS is getting you, I have no idea what could be
wrong. Make sure your ISP DNS information is correct.

If you need more tips, let me know. I'd need a little more info before I
could really attempt to fix it.

Yes - data is what I was referring to.

The goal is flexibility in an inexpensive package. We are bringing an
11Mb link in via microwave to the facility. The microwave is just an
ethernet bridge. It makes sense to use a Linux box routing ether to
ether. I can run packet filtering, anon ftp and DNS at the IPX where it
will not suck up my bandwidth. If the kernel can handle the traffic
flow, which I hope it can, it would replace the need for an expensive
dedicated router that would not run DNS or anon ftp. It would also be a
familar interface with plenty of troubleshooting and packet sniffing
options.

I am trying to find a source for real world routed performance
measures. If anyone has any links, please pass them on!

Thanks for the input. It is appreciated =)

i have set up linux and networking. I cant ping both machines (win95) and
Linux from each other. I can telnet from w95 to linux and can ftp from each
other. Problem is the web browser cant find the server on Linux. Keeps
telling me the server connection could not be established. Have i missed a
simple step? I noticed in the users there is no alias or group for http ...
should there be one? ftp and telnet etc do.

thanks

I have LINUX 2.0.33 (Caldera 1.2) running with SAMBA
running successfully though not elaborate. I can share
files and print.

I have a problem with printing; after successfully printing
a postscript file from win95 through SAMBA to an Epson LQ300
24 pin printer on the LINUX box I get the following:

%%[ Page: 1 ]%%
%%[ Page: 2 ]%%
%%[ Page: 3 ]%%
%%[ Page: 4 ]%%
%%[ LastPage ]%%

this is printed after a form feed ( the normal end of the
print job). This print jobs had 4 pages. How do I
eliminate these leftovers? I don't know if is part of
ghostscript or LPRng or samba. I am guessing it is part of
ghostscript but I haven't found any references yet.

telnet'ing in as root is not a very wise thing, but if you really want to do
it,

edit the /etc/securetty file and add the following:

    ttyp0
    ttyp1
    ttyp2

this will allow 3 root telnet logins at the same time..?good/bad..?
Check the /etc/ttys file and verify that there are entries :

    vt100 ttyp0
    vt100 ttyp1
    vt100 ttyp2

Special thanks to Pat Donahue who answered this earlier this week. he
helped me a lot.

Sorry this a bit off the group definition, but my ISP's server won't
accept messages directed to the Help forum.

I need a simple little utility to MIME and un_MIME files which is
independent of any mail reader. I'm running RH 5.2, but see no
indication it is included. Any suggestions?

I had been having the same problems - I'm running a slightly older

http://www.linuxhq.com/lnxlists/linux-kernel/lk_9811_05/msg00259.html)
and kernel 2.2pre-1. I got round it by mounting my shares using the
kernel automounter (autofs). This expires and auto-unmounts the shares
before the inactivity causes the connection to go down. I haven't had
the problem since.

You'll probably find http://www.wittsend.com/mhw/smbmount.html helpful
in getting this to work.
