I'm not sure what's best for you, but here's a few ideas.

You can connect two 10BaseT ports together with a crossover cable.

I wonder what ports a cable modem has? I suspect only 10BaseT.
On the other hand, they may well want you to use a certain NIC
with it.
>Having said that what is a good, cheap or mid priced NIC card that I

These days, boards with a 10BaseT connector tend to be about as
expensive as 100BaseTX boards.
If you have spare PCI slots in both boxes I would get 100TX boards.
Linksys advertise Linux compatibility on the box (although I've read
that they don't allow the IRQ to be shared with other cards). You
can get cheap kits with 100TX cards, cables and a 10BaseT hub for
around $80.
Alternatively, get ultracheap NE2000-type cards. I've seen them as
low as $10 with 10BaseT.

I am trying to generate my encrypted info to send off to get signed. I
used ssleay to generate a key (that works). When I do the final step
with ssleay to generate the certificate it gives me an error that it
cant find ssleay.cnf. I looked everywhere besides /usr/local/ssl etc
where it says it should be. I mean your if you spent $100 basically for
the secure apache and ssleay considering you could have gotten
everything else for free or on a $20 CD I would assume that apache and
ssleay were tested and work right. And include all the .cnf files or
whatever. Why didn't I get ssleay.cnf? How do I generate one? Where can
I get it? Should I return the CD?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

You can correct it by 2 means :
Reduce MTU to the minimum of the two networks (1500 ?) This may cause some
performance reduction on the tokenring network.
or
replace the bridge with a router (who will fragnent those ip-packets that
traverse the intersection and is to big for the destination network).
Don't blame NT in this case, blame your network administrator for the set-up !

the [ comamnd is a test programm, it will evaluate the second parameter and
ignore a trailing ]. Its actually a shell builtin or a link to "test". It
will return the boolean value via return code. The && is making a boolean
AND operation. Since shells are required to do shortcuts, they wont test the
second expression if the first one is false (since the and can never be true
in that case).
It simply means: if a default gateway is set in the variable execute route
with it.

Hi,
It has something to do with authentication. There is a document called
"authentication.txt" or so that explaines this issue.
The easiest way to to solve the problem is not using encrypted password
authentication ) by enabling Plain Text authentication on the win98 side.

Help! :-)
Has anyone had experience with BOOTP server and Vendor specific tags?
I have to get this working with a propriatary server in my test
network. I have to pass a boolean (no leading length byte) flag to
the client to load a special load file format.
Specifically I want to include a :T113: parameter in the bootptab file
BUT bootpd generates a syntax error.
I obtained the newest version from Sunsite, it describes this option
BUT it refuses to parse it.
I would appreciate any pointers on this. Tomorrow I will capture the
EXACT error response BUT it is just a generic syntax message ... no
specific number or reference.
This same bootpd setup works perfectly with other servers with no
problem, that is ones that don't require the vendor specific tag.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 23:49:19 GMT
I am trying to set up a simple dial in slip server using diplogin to start
slip running when users log in.
Ive had this sort of setup running with earlier Linux installations without
any problems.
The users are listed in diphosts in the required manner.
When dip starts running it displays the correct IP numbers for both the server
and the client , and creates a new interface called sl0 , but doesnt assign
the correct IP address for the new interface nor does it add the additional
client to the routing tables.
An error message appears in the syslog which says
DIP tty_login cannot TIOCSTTY: Operation not permitted.
The version of dip is 3.3.70 and the kernel is 2.0.34.
SLIP is compiled into the kernel.
I can get slip to work by manually adding routes and re ifconfigging the sl0
interface to the correct IP address, buts its obviously not a practical
solution.
The problem isnt machine specific as it occurrs on a number of differant
machines .
Thanks

Two 56K modems will only connect with 33.6 between each other, unless one
side is an ISDN device and can do "56K host" mode.
That's just the way 56k works.

The Linux box would be dedicated to the role of NIS master.
Can you let me know if this works or fails ?

P.S. Just to be absolutely clear - this is about NIS not NIS+. RedHat
5.1 comes with NIS packages in the distribution and I intend to use
these.

Hello!
I need to write a small shell scritp that will look to see if my two
ppp connections are up, get the ip addresses, delte them from the
routing table and then add my eql device to the route as the default
route......I have a pretty good idea how to do this but, I was wondering
if anyone could offer a good book on shell programming? Also, I want to
put something in the crontab to look for ppp connections that have gone
down...If they do I want it to look to see if they've come back up and
eql_enslave them again......Any suggestions for the two?
I was thinking:
#!/bin/sh
$ppp0 #I think these are variables in a shell script
can't remember?
$ppp1
$Local_IP
if[` ifconfig | grep P-t-P | awk '{print$3}' | awk -F :
'{print $2}' | cat -b | wc -l ` -eq 2];
then
$ppp0 = /ifconfig/ | grep P-t-P | awk '{print$3}' | awk
-F : '{print $2}'
$ppp1 = same_as_above_except_last line.... awk
'{print$4}'
/usr/sbin/route del $ppp0
/usr/sbin/route del $ppp1
/usr/sbin/route add default dev eql

Is this about right? Thanks in advance for all the help!

need to purchase a second card for the Linux and have it do "traditiona;"

Linux is so versitle, I figure why ask not first before I go spend the cash on

Hi ...

Windows clients at my company. The clients connect with no problem and can
do all TCP/IP networking applications including telnet, ftp and web browsing.
The Linux ppp server machine sits on the same network with the NT Primary

"network neighborhood". I configured the client to log on to network and I
set the domain correctly. Is there some other protocol that I need to run
on the linux ppp server?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
