I have exactly the same problem with my Redhat 5.1 installation. I have a
Zoom 56K modem that is jumper configured for COM3 IRQ5. I too have tried
all sorts of DNS, MTU, RTU configurations and get "stalled" (message in
Netscape) transfers. Slow is VERY VERY slow: in WIN 95 I get anywhere
from 3000 to 4000 bytes per sec, while in Linux I get a whopping 30-80 bytes
per sec. I too an a Linux infant and am lost as how to solve this.
Thanks much in advance for any help.

I assume you want a "split DNS", where the internal side doesn't know
about internet addresses, but the external one does.

This is explained rather well in "DNS & BIND" by O'Reilly and Associates.

there is something I do not understand:
1. level DNS is the one, which has the zone info files ?
2. level DNS is the one, which caches the 1. level dns and
gives non-authoritative answers?

how can I set up the 2. level dns? (since you need two to get accepted
your domain....)

    many thanks

I am interested in seeing the IP addresses of those who connect to my
machine via telnet or otherwise. I want to be able to run a sort of
traceroute on the connections to see where they are originating.

I know it can be done, but I don't know just how. Could someone point
me to some instructions on this.

Thanks,

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Karl Schuster)
Date: Thu, 07 Jan 1999 05:17:36 GMT

Greetings,

Have seen a lot of postings recently regarding the "subject"
topics. Here's my two cents. The single biggest factor in
getting things to work was finding out how to properly compile
tulip.c. The instructions (from the NetGear floppy
\HELP\LINUX\LINUX.TXT file) did not work for me. What I needed
to do differently was to _not_ use the supplied compile command:

   gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall \
      -Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c

but, instead use:

   gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall \
      -Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c \
      `[ -f /usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo -DMODVERSIONS`

It's located in the bottom of the source code of tulip.c in a little
comment block. Also, this is for a modular kernel, not a monolithic
kernel. Note: that "-O6" reads "dash-oh-six", _not_ "dash-zero-six."

Then copy the object file thusly:

   cp tulip.o /lib/modules/2.0.XX/net/tulip.o

   in my case, 2.0.XX = 2.0.35-1

Next, run:

   /sbin/depmod -a

All references to modules should be resolved.

Next, add the following to /etc/conf.modules:

   alias eth0 tulip

Finally, reboot.

All of the above was done immediately after a clean intall
of RH5.1. I deliberately left out things out of the
networking portion of the install like dhcpcd (and instead
used the fixed IP initially given to me by ComCast),
sendmail, amd, and httpd.

Boot time is crisp as is response to other machines.

If you are interested, the tulip.c 0.89K source can be
found at:

   http://members.home.net/appliedarts/redhat/tulip89k.html

The most current tulip driver (tulip 0.90) is available at:

   http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/tulip.html

I have not tried it, yet. Lots of good instructions at this
site.

Hope that this helps.

Karl

i can't quite get how to do this....
ive got slackware linux (kernel 2.0.36) installed. i have a compaq isa pnp
isdn card.
isapnp was installed by slackware automatically. this works fine, and i assign
the card the same configs given to it by windows. i then want to feed these
into modprobe, right?
so, modprobe hisax type=19 protocol=2 irq=9 io=0x2000,0x2100,0x2180
hisax being, according to numerous docs, the driver i want. type 19 is y card
and protocol 2 is euro.
i get:
hisax: version 2.1
hisax: revisions 1.15/1.10/1.10/1.30/1.8
hisax: support for ?9 card not selected
hisax: card ?9 not installed!
/lib/modules/2.0.35/misc/hisax.o: init_module: device or resource busy

ive tried modprobe with alternate settings, like specifying only irq and not
io, autoconfig, skip_test and all sorts of other things i've encountered in
various help files. so what's wrong?

also i dont quite get how, even if this were to run correctly, i would then
assign that driver a /dev/whatever device?

also, according to many places i need isdn4linux. /dev/isdnctrl* exist, as do
/dev/isdn* which seems to imply it was installed with slackware, but man -k
isdnctrl produces nothing and there is no such command as isdnctrl.
thus i downloaded what i think is isdn4linux (though its called isdn4kernel
and also another thing called isdn4k-utils), but cant get the to compile since
they claim they cant find my kernel source! the kernel source lies in
/usr/src/linux/include/linux (at least that's the (only) place where the
kernel.h file is. still it claims to not find it? if it doesnt want kernel.h
then what does it what? the first linux is a symb.link to linux-2.0.35 but it
makes no difference if i type that out completely or not.

if anyone can help please do so. i would love to get isdn working under linux.
the less i need windows for the better.

if you could CC youre replies to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] i would be pleased.
thanks
fred

Aaaarrrrrggggghhhhh!

I re-compiled wu.ftpd 2.4 using "build lnx" & ran into a nasty problem
with dirent.h. I hacked that, completed the compile, now it works.

Maybe original binary was compiled for shadow which I don't use?
