I have a freshly-installed copy of linux (from RedHat -- r5.0) with a
default setup of tcpd.
The hosts.deny file works properly to deny access, but I do not get the
e-mail from the booby trap to inform me of refused connections. tcpdchk
and tcpdmatch both report that the option is bad (even though it matches
exactly what is in the documentation, and is the default install).
safe_finger is installed where the option says it is, and works from the
command line (your sysadmin will find a finger attempt from the host I
am troubleshooting. Please apologize for me).
here's the output from tcpdchk -v
>>> Rule /etc/hosts.deny line 13:
daemons: ALL
clients: ALL
error: /etc/hosts.deny, line 13: bad option name:
"(/usr/sbin/safe_finger"
access: denied
here's the actual line from hosts.deny
ALL : ALL : (/usr/sbin/safe_finger -l @%h | /usr/bin/Mail -s %d-%h root)

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
Cheers!

like, interfaces = 192.168.0.1/24 210.55.210.240/24 in the smb.conf file

I run roughly the same network: one Linux/Win95 box connected via Ethernet
with an NT Server box. With enough information on what your setup is, we
should be able to get you up and running.
Your statement that NT won't accept 255.255.255.0 as a netmask is
puzzling, since it defines a common Class-C network, the type most of us
would likely use in the circumstances. Does it give any message when you
try specifying this netmask?
Maybe it's one of the netcards. Can you ping the NT box from itself? The
Linux box from itself?
To simplify things and ease your mind, you do not need to setup DNS,
DHCP, Gateways, routers, WINS, or bind to run your network or connect
either of your hosts to the Internet. You DO need, on the NT side, to sort
out why NT won't accept a Class-C network, and on the Linux side, some
configuration files must be in good working order.
It's a feeble suggestion, but...
In the /etc/hosts file, confirm the following:
127.0.0.1 localhost
223.223.223.1 hostname1
223.223.223.0 hostname2
And, in the /etc/host.conf file, confirm the following:
order hosts,bind
multi on
That's all I can suggest until you can provide more information on error
messages, setup, etc. Good luck.

By your log the modem connection is established, but the ppp protocol is not
starting.
Use option debug in pppd to see the initial lcp exchange...

The Perl DBI includes a ODBC driver.

Thanks for the effort Dave!
I got the new pcmcia-3.0.6 package; all installed smoothly. Well packaged!
The card is now "fully" recognised, the modem works great, but not the network
interface, sniff...
I don't know whether this is of any help to the developers:
when the card is initialised, the kernel messages show the following error:
eth0: Invalid if_port 0 requested, ignored.
I also wrote a little script that shuts down the network, calls cardctl eject,
cardctl insert and restarts the network.
When I run it, the card is recognised as a memory card. Apparently this
happens when quickly running cardctl eject and cardctl insert consecutively.

Hi,
Can anybody tell me if it is possible to make a link between the
microsoft SQL server and Linux
so that they can exchange data. Can anybody point me to a URL where I
can get some more info about this subject.
Thanks,

Hello,
Is there a FTP tool which enable me to work in passive mode,
with a proxy, under X-Window ?
The command line FTP session looks like:
ftp proxy.foo.com
name: username1
password: password1
ftp> user [EMAIL PROTECTED]
password: password2
ftp> passive
Thank you very very much.
Manuel
