Subject: IP Forwarding To Web Server
Date: Sat, 09 Jan 1999 15:34:18 GMT

I have a local network and a gateway which performs Masquerading and
Forwarding work. Now I'd like to set up a Web server BEHIND the
gateway. Unfortunately, using the line mentioned in the Firewall HOWTO
didn't do it: requests to gateway's web port end up on gateway's web
server. The line is:

# Forward Web connections to your Web Server
ipfwadm -F -a accept -b -P tcp -S 0.0.0.0/0 1024:65535 -D 192.168.1.3 80

Furthermore, doing the above-mentioned thing seemed to eventually (not
even right away) screw up my firewall. I wonder if the HOWTO is right:
the idea seems to be to forward all tcp packets to the port 80 of web
server. Notice that this line comes after I run

ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 -D 0.0.0.0

to set up my regular services.

Subject: MX records/secondary mail host cfg?
Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 14:09:50 +1100

Hi...

I have a scenario as follows:

Novell 4.11 with Groupwise 5.2 LAN connects to an ISP ( linux with bind
8(?) )thru modem (not permanent connection). Visiting Novell site, it is
advised that a secondary mail host needs to be setup at ISP end and the
Groupwise mail host needs to be primary mail host configured at ISP end. I
know how to configure the Novell end but I'm confused at the ISP end.

I did some research and found that I need to publish MX records at Linux end
for the above situation. Following is a copy of the zone file (?) for the
Novell LAN mentioned above:

; BIND version named 8.1.2-T3B Sun Aug 2 05:29:18 EST 1998
; BIND version [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/export/redhat/BUILD/src/bin/named

*** if the Novell mail host (Groupwise) is called hstevens.com.au, what
modification do I need for the above file? Do I need to modify any other
DNS related files? The www.hstevens.com.au is currently active on the
'Net - I can ping it.

I've looked at the DNS-HOWTO's but I'm still confused... ANY help is greatl
y appreciated.

Thank you

Plain FTP is enough and exacly how you do it depends on the
clients. ncftp builds it into the get command most of the time. When
that fails I fall back to ftp and use the reget command.

Only major fly in the ointment is FTP servers like M$' and Solaris'
which "support the REST command if the offset is 0". This rather
defeats the point of the rest command. M$'s server takes award for
worst server by cutting me off in the middle of a long download in the
name of bandwidth limiting, so I have to start all over again (due to
lack of worthwhile support of the rest command). This sucks hard.

(I usually resort to a quick ssh connection to a box with a fixed
leased line and downloading it to that box and from that box to my
machine. The bandwidth I get is better too...)

First of all, are; you sure your getting an mlppp connection? ie: are both B
channel LED's lit up when you get connected? Assuming they are, you should
definately get better throughput thenj 2-3K/second. What is the DTE rate for
/dev/modem set to? I believe the correct command you should issue to setserial
(prior to ppp-on, or ifup command) is:
#setserial -a -v /dev/modem 115200 irq 3 port 0x2f8
assuming /dev/modem points to COM2.

The other parameters in setserial (spd_cust, spd_vhi, divisior, baud_base)
shouldnt matter and you should take the default if you use the built in COM
ports on the motherboard. I assume you have a 16550 UART, so the defaults
should be ok.

Be that as it may, the dte rate (baud rate) for setserial will be overridden
by the baud rate in ppp options, so it's possible that although you think that
you're setting the highest baud rate via setserial, it's autobauding down to a
lower baud rate because of a setting in /etc/ppp/options.

Finally, you really shouldnt expect a 16550 to go any faster then 115200
because of it's smaller i/o buffer size. It *can* be made to work at 230400,
but it's tricky and I don't recdomend it.

Hallo,

ich habe eine analoge Standleitung, an beiden Seiten ein US Robotics Modem
und Linux (SuSE 6.0).

Vom Provider habe ich folgende Angaben:

Init-String: at&f1&l1s32=6&w
IP-Subnet: 111.111.111.128/29 (8er Subnet, 6 nutzbare IP-Adressen)
Netzmaske: 255.255.255.248
Adresse fr PPP-Interface: 222.222.222.210
Providerseite: 333.333.333.333

brigens was heit: 8er Subnet, 6 nutzbare IP-Adressen?

Vielen Dank im Voraus!

could you tell me, perhaps, where to get the correct include files for
the
netinet directory?

the header files in the /usr/include/linus/netinet directory on my
machine seem to have missing information required by
SATAN....particularly my ip_icmp.h and the ip_tcp.h and the ip_udp.h
files seem to be missing a LOT of symbols.

his chat program called "party" runs on alot of platforms including

FreeBSD, Linux, SunOS, and BSDI (and probably many more)

if you telnet://grex.org (which is a public access UNIX system)
you can try it out :)

No. There are bandwidth impacts when many busy nodes start colliding

I don't know your situation... do you have two cards? Generally, ne2000
driver for ISA will work if you pass the config information. However,
you can recompile the kernel with pci ne2000 support and if that's your
only card it will be autodetected. If you have 2 cards only one gets
autoprobed. See 2-Ethernet-card mini-howto or try adding

append="ether=0,0,eth1"

to the top of /etc/lilo.conf PRESUMING THAT YOU'VE COMPILED IN YOUR PCI
NE2000 SUPPORT.

Sorry I disagree with that.... as I have personally built a linux box with 8
nics
yes 8 NICs... and the drivers are loaded as modules

and it works perfectly

the cards are RealTek NE2000 clones
4 x PCI
4 x ISA

I've seen this once or twice long ago. I would check the modem device node
with "ls -l /dev/ttySx, x=whatever is correct for you. This is mine:

crw-rw-r-- 1 root tty 4, 66 Jan 9 08:51 /dev/ttyS2

If there is no beginning c or something else looks out of place when compared
to this then you could try removing it and remaking it:

 rm /dev/ttyp0
 mknod /dev/ttyp0 c 4 66

with the minor mode number 66 replaced by what's appropriate for you.

: presumably the last line is the problem
: the modem is a noname 56k connected to ttyS0 (it works fine under NT4.0)

I doubt that even NT will use a Winmodem or friends and I don't associate
this error message with one, but it's something to think about.

|| The most likely culprit is DNS. One of the internal systems is

Tcpdump may be missing packets. For instance, DNS queries use UDP,
not TCP. Tcpdump will not see it, if its name is an indication of what

Switch to diald. Diald can show packets passing the interface, as well

|| This is harder. I too have noticed that the filtering is only available

Ignoring packets like above to udp/13223 would be a piece of cake.

Date: Sat, 09 Jan 1999 13:13:24 -0500

I have read books and learned all about how DNS works but I can't find a
good example on Virtual Hosting with one IP address. I'm assuming the
files "named.boot" and "named.conf" are the files I need to focus on. I
have over 10 virtual hosts on one IP address. Anyone willing to help me
out on this is a life saver. I just want one good example and I'm a
happy man!

Thanks in advance.

Assuming you've got the routing sorted and the only problem is the DNS
you should install a named (BIND8) locally. You set your resolv.conf
to point to 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.1 as first choice (I'm never sure which
is better).

You should configure BIND8 with stub zones for the intranet domains.

With BIND4 stub zones are not an option AFAIK but you can create
sleath secondaries (if you primary allows you to do zone trasfers).

Give MySQL a try (Free on Linux). http://www.tcx.se

Hast du Angst, dass dich keiner beachtet, weil du in so viele Newsgroups

strange... sounds like cvs/ssh is tickling some subtle networking bug.
here's what i'd try doing.

1) snag a pristine 2.0.36 kernel off of ftp.us.kernel.org (i've no idea
what version debian ships with) and see if the bug is still present.

2) if it is, try the latest 2.0.37 pre-patch from ftp.uk.linux.org

3) if you're still having the problem, capture a complete tcpdump and send
a bug report off to linux-kernel at vger.rutgers.edu, where most of the
   core hackers hang out.

Take a look at ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO it
is pretty good. A really good book is DNS & BIND by O'Reilly .....
O'Reilly books in general are great for unix type material, many
different books. Here is a link to Amazon.com to that book
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1565925122/002-8984378-2694662
If that doesn't work just go to www.amazon.com and in their search box
type in DNS & BIND
                Later,
