Sounds like it isn't translating the NETBIOS names.
You might want to try putting an entry in to translate the NETBIOS names on the
NT machines to see if they are translating the name correctly. (Is it LMHOSTS on
NT also?) also try:
net view \\NAMEOFTHELINUXBOX
to see if the machine is showing up properly (i think that works in NT too)
or from the linux box type
nmblookup -d 2 '*'
that should come up with all the smb clients runnung on the network (the NT's and
the Linux box)
>
You could also try setting the NT machines to resolve netbios names using DNS and
make sure that they either have the entries themselves for the linux host, or
that the DNS server has the proper entries.
Hope that helps some

i've got one ip, shared, for 8 computers. then i've got an ftp server
running on one of these computers. when this computer was a telnt bbs,
all i had to do was big a port to forward to that computer, and have
that computer listen on that port.
i'm not having nearly as much with wu.ftpd as i had with my bbs
software... i made wu.ftpd listen on port 921. people can connect to the
server, but they can't do anything (ie list files, get/put, etc).
i guessed this might be because of that ftpdata thing on port 20. so i
forwarded port 920 to the ftpserv computer, and changed it's
/etc/services to say: ftpdata [tcp and udp] 920 ...
but this didn't help at all. how come people can connect to the server,
but then not be able to do anything?
any ideas?

hi all,
i'm trying to get ppp under suse linux 5.3 work.
everything is configured as explained in the handbook.
but if i run /etc/suseppp/scripts/ppp-up:
'kernel lacks ppp-support' comes up. actually this is not true.
(the kernel is compiled with ppp and other networking support)
the /var/log/messages file:
Jan 9 15:07:08 sexslave kernel: PPP: version 2.2.0 (dynamic channel
allocation) Jan 9 15:07:08 sexslave kernel: PPP Dynamic channel allocation

discipline registered. Jan 9 15:07:08 sexslave syslog: ioctl(TIOCGETD): Not

presumably the last line is the problem
the modem is a noname 56k connected to ttyS0 (it works fine under NT4.0)
any ideas?

Hi,
You might need to make pppd suid root and thats all.
I would recommend creating a group that is allowed to dial-out as opposed
to letting any user bring up the link. Heres an example using
shadowed passwords.
'groupadd -g 1005 dialout' (create the group)
'usermod -u 1001 -g 1001 -G dialout,cdrom,floppy,audio myusername'
(add yourself to the new group and any other groups you are a member of)
'chgrp dialout /dev/ttyS3' (change the modem to device to the new group)
'chmod g+rw,o-rwx /dev/ttyS3' (deny access to non-group members)
'chgrp dialout /usr/sbin/pppd' (change group of pppd)
'chmod g+x,o-rwx /usr/sbin/pppd' (make it executable by group only)
'chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd' (make it suid root)
Now members of the group dialout should be able to bring up the link.
Hope this helps,
Dave

No.... you can buy/make a crossover cable. To make see -
http://www.linksys.com/support/faqs/howbuild/wiring.htm I found this useful
when putting a new end on a cable, the color chart worked great for me. Where
I live in New York you can buy a 6' crossover cable for under $15 or approx.

I am having trouble with this new card I bought...
It's a linksys combo pci2 card, which was promised to work in linux with the
ne driver (they said to use that instead of the ne2kpci). With redhat 5.2 in
the start up of linux i get an error stating that irq of 255 will most
likely not work. There are no jumpers (strictly PnP) and whenever I try to
run the setup program in windows or DOS, it freezes automatically. Even if I
set the irq in linux, it doesn't read that at boot time, therefore my card
doesn't activate. When I try to activate it in netcfg, I get a delaying
initialization of eth0 error. It's set up to use DHCP and I manually put in
the name servers to avoid any trouble. I've tried everything I can think of
short of purchasing a new card... anyone have suggestions?

I think your ISP wants you to authenticate via pap. With pap you don't get a
login prompt.
Try the pppd option name myname. And make an entry in pap-secrets for your
name and password.

Subject: large packet loss and DUPS with 3com and RH4.2
Date: Sat, 09 Jan 1999 15:44:51 GMT
Hi,
I have read every HOW TO I could find and also the Network administrator's
guide and searched most of the newsgroups and tried a LOT of different
setting, still same results. I am finally resorting to the newsgroups hoping
to learn from you and later be able to help others :-)
I am setting up a linux box as a file server at our school. I installed RedHat
4.2 which went smooth. I am not able to ping any of our Mac or PC clients.
(Although sometimes I get a response with DUPS and large packet loss) I
installed the networking option and it is enabled. 3COM card was recognized.
Cabling is fine since our NT is working ok with the same hub and cables, even
tried changing the cables.
Here is my setup
Linux box IP 192.168.1.1
255.255.255.0
Clients 192.168.1.2 etc.....
gateway 192.168.1.254 (not connected to any other networks, just connected a
few clients to test so far, no Internet access)
Tried both enable route and disable route
not using DNS yet, just Hosts file.
Can ping the LINUX 3com 3c5098 card.
After ping -f, ran netstat -i and got:
lo RX 24703 TX 24703
eth0 RX 800 TX 851
After ping -f to the client I get :
lo RX 51 TX 51
eth0 RX 96 TX 147
All lights flash on the hub and NIC's. I am assuming that after installing
RedHat 4.2 with networking option it is already configured to at least be able
to ping another client, am I wrong to assume this. Everything else was set up
it seemed.
I read a lot about the plug and play NIC. I didn't disable the P&P but I am
assuming that because the install recognized my card and I am able to ping
the card, there is no problems with the I/O or IRQ. Maybe am wrong to
assume this. I am just a teacher that volunteers to administer the school
network. It is a lot of fun though.
Thanks,

runterlade (so ab ca 3MB) ohne irgendeine Fehlermeldung ab. Das
bedeutet,
hilft,
ist der Netz-Schalter.
Leider kenne ich mich mit Linux noch nicht so gut aus und wei

Ich wre dankbar fr alle Ideen und Hinweise

card inside. I have an ADSL hookup (full time internet connection with
fixed IP address). Able to run all of my internet ops without problem
using Windows 98 on the same hardware. Can't get it to wok with Linux.
I have all of the necessary addresses entered in the Linuxconf file.
I get all of the usual successful startup messages for Ethernet in the
boot process. The Tulio driver for eth0 is loaded. My software tells
me that the ethernet setup is active, but I can't get out onto the
net. When I ping the localhost it works, but I can't get it to ping
anything on the net. I can't ping the DNS, the gateway, or any other

Any help would be very much appreciated.
