Kyle, I'll try to help but I need some additional information:

To what kind of lan you want to connect to? 10 base-2 , 10 base T ?

Is your NIC configured for the right type of network??
What is the output of netstat -nr ?

"console" on Linux is the "linux" terminal type. It usually isn't the
same as something that you would telnet in from (unless you are running
in the console on another Linux system).

Terminfo for different terminal types differs (sometimes slightly,
sometimes a lot). If you know the terminal type you're using, you
can find the correct terminfo.

3Com's work well, and I've had pretty good luck with LinkSys cards
(and they're a lot cheaper than 3Com ;).

I believe setting the defaut route to eth1 will take care of this. No need
to even run routed or gated.

Just make sure your other boxes have the Linux box as the default gateway to
direct traffic at it.

Is this the Longshine PCMCIA NE2000 compatible adapter (I can't check the
number on mine - i'm currently using it...)?

I just plugged it in and rebooted - the PCMCIA software in the kernel (or
wherever else) detected it and I could then use ifconfig up eth0 fine.

I've just done this configuration 2 months ago. All you need is a RedHat
or, prefered for server services, a Slakware 3.6+ distribution.
Install the Slackware with sendmail using STMP support (not UUCP).
Read a few HOW-TO about sendmail, /etc/sendmail.cf, and the '-q' option.
Configure local users (adduser and other nice things).
Configure the PPP connection (pppsetup).
Use the 'fetchmail' program to retreive mail from pop3 servers to your own
linux box.

My linux box works on a P200 with 32Mo of RAM and a 4Go hard disk (3Go
are shared for MS-Win workstations using samba). You will 'only' need a
486 or Pxxx with a 525Mo and 32Mo of ram to do only an e-mail gateway.

I had the exact error. Check (on boot-up) that some other device
(probably the serial controller on IRQ 5) isn't using the IRQ that the
FA310TX is. If it is, manually assign the nic card an unused IRQ and
see if that works.

What does a caching nameserver do when I'm offline, and it gets a
request which it doesn't have cached? How does this change when I
start home networking?

More to the point, are there any basic tutorials on DNS and BIND
to set one up for the home/dialup user? Even more to the point,
is this something that the home/dialup user shouldn't even do?
The documentation available from www.isc.org is oriented to more
'industrial-grade' usage.

This reminds me of wading through the Bat-Book trying to get
sendmail to queue without DNS lookup delays (got that) and to
get full userid/domain translation. (didn't get that)

With RedHat v5.2, the default is to NOT allow IP forwarding, so make
sure you edit "/etc/sysconfig/network" to correct this.

Yes i can telnet to ppp0 over the internet
I cannot see why the firewall is blocking this trafic, if you look at the

No i cannot reach the eth1 device over the internet. eth1 has on

I am trying to run a linux (RH5.2) server as a Wins resolution. The
problem is that when I set the WinXX machines to use the Samba

anything I need to do to setup linux as a Wins server other than adding

hi all,
I have been trying to get foxpro 2.6 for unix running under linux for
medium sized multiuser app. I have made some real progress with the
help of some nice people, but I have a few issues left to deal with.
The main on is that if I telnet in, the screen does not clear/refresh
like it should. It was much worse before I got terminfo file from a
guy that he edited it so it run foxpro correctly on the console. I
have tried several telnet programs and have found that net term shows
everything else correctly and shows foxpro better than anything else.
Does any body have any idea where to get a term info file that will
work or know how to edit one? any help would be greatly appreciated

Even though it changes all the time, you really only have to pay the two
dollars once. After you have it working, you can easily update online. The
CD is just to get you started the first time. It really will make your life

Hello,
I am new to Linux. I have just installed, Red Hat 5.1.
It is very stable !
Now, I have created a little local network, 3 pcs:

1 192.168.0.1 Linux on it
2 192.168.0.2 W 95
3 192.168.0.3 W 95

I have ftp, telnet and apache running. Apache works great. I have a problem
with both ftp and telnet. If I type the command "ftp localhost", or ftp
192.168.0.1 from the Linux terminal itself, (samething with telnet) everything
is fine, but if I do it from one of the W 95 machines, I instantly receive a
message saying connected, but then it looks like "hang" for 1 or 2 minutes,
until I see a welcome screen. If I try, WS_fgp95, for example, I never get
connected.
Does anybody have any idea of what is happening ?

Thank you very much,

No matter what I try, I cannot get my machine to route packets
between the two ethernet interfaces. Hosts on both networks and other
networks can be pinged from my Linux machine. I have recompiled the
kernel for firewalling and have issued appropriate ipfwadm commands from
/sbin. I am not masquerading or proxying. My routing table appears to
accurately reflect the network configuration. I cannot ping the
ethernet "internet" card of my Linux machine from the "local" network.
Here is what my test network, basically, looks like;

go to the httpd.conf file and put the the URL that you want your server
to generate there. eg www.xyz.com.hk
you may then go to control-panel network setup and add a New Host giving
it an IP address.
Alternatively, put localhost.localdomain at ServerName just to get
things started without the error message.
