What kind of hardware can squid reside on. I have an old P90 with 24MB RAM,
which I plan to run Squid on as a cache for ftp and http traffic on a net
with appx. 15-20 users. Or is this too weak, to do any good job?

Sure thing. Accessing M$/linux servers from linux through dialup/whatever
connection is not a problem. You can use the I-switch to give smbclient
the IP address of the server. The other way around is a bit more tricky
though (from Windozes). You have to put the IP address to the hosts file
(or was it lmhosts? It's been a long time since I've done this :-/ and
then you just use the host name just as it was in your local network.

can you ping the www.whatever.com DIRECTLY from your linux-box ?
i hazard a guess here:
the ping-from-your-win-95 goes out, meets www.etc..., but doesn't know which
machine to return to (since 192.168.x.x is a private adress , not internet).
so you need to setup a firewall (or whatever lets you use your
one-modem-and-one-REAL-internetadress from a network behind that)

In my expirience smbclient can do. At least while listing the shares
you are accessing.
I still have problems to get those special characters in the names on my
harddisk.
You have to edit your smb.conf file with character set = iso8859-1
and client code page = 850 or 437 (whatever the most clients have)

Look at the nfsroot howto, it should help greatly. Don't expect wonderful

I have an SCSI zip drive too, it's too simple under Linux. Just plug in,
boot your box, mount the Drive and work!!
It will recognize your ZIP drive as a removeable drive. It will not allow
to
eject mounted disks. When unmounted, it will allow ejecting.
There is a package that comes along with the SuSE distribution, called
ziptools, which allows soft-eject, protecting disks, etc.

I do not have any experience with CD-Rs under Linux, but i've heard of
some solutions (cdroast, xcdroast ....). For that reason, i believe it
works.

Hey all,
quick question...

I'm playing around with the port addresses of various services...
And I can't get HTTP to be anything but 80.
Even if I change it to something like 7080, it only exists on 80!?!

I'm sure I'm missing something stupid. But I kill -HUP inetd and I even tried
rebooting to make sure. The file /etc/services still retains my changes, is
there somewhere else I need to play around?

Thanks in advance,
Jon

Can't PCI cards share an interrupt?

What I'm getting on boot-up is, "device or resource busy." Okay, busy

The easiest was would be to upgrade your kernel. I know 2.0.34 has it. You can also
download the code for the module by itself.

Wrong on most accounts. const Foo *foo; and Foo const *foo; mean the same: foo
being a pointer to const Foo. const Foo const *foo; would mean the same but is
illegal (double const). You are confusing this with Foo * const foo; and const
Foo * const foo; respectively. -David Kastrup, comp.os.linux.development.system

Your talking like a Web connection? If so, then just install Apache web
server (if it's not already) on Linux and run the applet through the web
server. If you're talking just a TCP/IP connection, then as long as the
boxes talk to one another, you can do it (with a little socket
programming, I'm sure).

You *do* have the boxes networked, don't you?

Subject: SMC EZ 10/100
Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 09:40:01 -0500

I have a PCI SMC EZ 10/100 I am trying to install in Redhat 5.2 along
with a NE2000 compatible card. I editted the conf.modules file to
include these two cards with the correct io and irq settings. For the
SMC EZ card- I used the SMC Ultra driver which should work according to
the FAQ.

To install two network cards- I added
ether = irqSMC, ioSMC, eth0 ether = irqNE, ioNE, eth1

to the lilo.conf file.

The funny thing is is that when I put the SMC as eth0 in the
conf.modules file, the NE 2000 loads fine as eth0 but it states that it
is delaying loading eth1. When I put the NE 2000 first in the
conf.modules file, it tried to load the SMC card which it cannot find-
and it delays loading the eth1 once again.

Has anyone gotten this card to work? The FAQ states the etherEZ cards
should be able to load with the Ultra driver. It does state that the
SMC card must be set into this mode. I ran the setup utility under dos
and could not see anything such as "turn on ultra compatibility".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

To copy files using tomsrtbt, you would not use telnet, but rather:

"snarf" will fetch files using either "ftp", "http", "finger", or "gopher"

"NFS" allows you to mount remote (NFS server) drives, then just use "cp"

"rsh" and/or "rshd" and/or "nc" (netcat) combined with "cpio" will work:

rsh <PentiumHost> find <path> "|" cpio -oB | cpio -iuvmdB # or similar

I usually use some combination of rsh & cpio...

Check your /etc/resolv.conf file, if you have the domain name and nameserver
IP configured correctly.
Then compare it with the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties to see if they both
reside on the same network.

The network card is correctly configured what u need is to setup correctly
your routing table and DNS on both machine.

<P>I have disabled PNP on the card, and I know the card is good as I have
<BR>booted the machine using a dos floppy and run the full set of
<BR>diagnostics using 3c5x9cfg.exe including the echo test with the Linux
<BR>machine as both the echo server and echo client.

<P>looking at the output of 'cat /proc/ioports' doesn't show any I/O port
<BR>conflicts and 'cat /proc/interrupts' doesn't show any IRQ conflicts.

<P>I'm so close to having this working, but just haven't been able to
<BR>figure out why I can ping the other machines on my local network, but
<BR>they can't ping the Linux machine.&nbsp; If anyone can provide any
ideas as
<BR>to what I need to do to make this work I would be very grateful.

Check your&nbsp; /etc/resolv.conf file, if you have the domain name and
nameserver IP configured correctly.
<BR>Then compare it with the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties to see if they
both reside on the same network.

<P>The network card is correctly configured what u need is to setup correctly
your routing table and DNS on both machine.

That's the default behavior, as long as the subnet masks are correct for
all clients. Why do you feel you need to use force?
