I think you have to recompile your kernel with enabled pci ne2000 support in

Do both machines have the same netmask ? what is the IP address of the windows
machine ? You could try a netmask of a smaller class network like 255.255.255.0

I've started using VNC from:
http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc
Much easier to set up than an X display server, and it's available for
all sorts of UNIX. NT, too (we use it in classroom labs).

Subject: How to Diagnose diald problems
Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 09:10:30 GMT
Greetings all!
Over the last couple of weeks I've done a from-scratch installation of
RH5.2 on a machine which is being used for real work and also as an
Internet gateway for our Win98 boxes. I've gotten the LAN, PPP and
IPMasq all set up, and diald is close to working. My problem is that
it doesn't reliably connect when it should or time out when all is
quiet. If I manually start and stop the connection using dialdc
up/down, it will enter and remain in the intended state.
I just broke down and showed my wife how to log into the Linux box and
type "dialdc up" if it doesn't connect by itself, but that's not the
painless solution I wanted!
My local network is generally working right (routing, DNS, etc.) and
once the connection is up, Internet access works too. I didn't make
any changes to the standard.filter file for diald. I'm running diald
version 0.16.5a.
I'm looking for general ideas on how to fix/troubleshoot this problem,
and also wondering if there's any way to find out the state of diald's
connection timers, i.e. what types of packets it's detecting, how much
time remains before it thinks it should disconnect, etc. Something
like that, especially if it also monitored throughput, would be a
handy thing to leave running....
Thanks for any input.

You probably have " Connect to Internet as needed" turned on in the Internet

I don't know how to you would get it not to do that for local connections

What do I put in my /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward file to enable

Also, it appears that one of the rc script files is set up to read this file.

hi!
i want to use a linux server for printing and i need page accounting.
to do page accounting it is necessary to read the page counter
of the printer. therefore you need a bidirectional interface like
serial interface or jetdirect.
i want to use the parallel interface of o pc.
is it possible to use a bidirectional parallel interface to read
the page counter?
i tried ifhp filter with LPRng package and didn't have sucess.

Hi!
I just set up a network between 2 computers (SuSE Linux 6.0 on them).
One is set up as a NFS and NIS server, the other as client. On the
client everything looks fine. However I have a little problem on the
server. I have a graphical login (the KDE login) and there one can click
on the users that can log in. But on the server they appear twice! I
guess this is because it first looks in its own /etc/passwd, and then
asks the server. This isn't that much of a problem for me, but not very
nice either. Does anyone know, if I did something wrong, or is this
maybe a bug in the KDE login?
BTW, I tried to remove that last line int the /etc/passwd of the server
(+::::::) but nothing changed.
Thanx for your help

which I confirmed to be the EXACT chipset that is supported by the

I do not see the sense of the latest of these lines. The net 000000A1 is
connected directly - so why you try to route it over
000000A2:006008A39CB5?

I did look around a bit and saw that the line defining the numeric
values for the frame type 802.2TR is marked as obsolete. ifconfig from
nettools 1.49 does not even does take a look if the interface might have
this frametype setted and thus will not printout it's IPX address. A
grep on the ipx implementation in kernel 2.1.131 revealed following
result:

As your kernel seems to support 802.2TR as a special type still might
continue using it but if nothing works switch to 802.2. The fact the IPX
address is not being printed out is of the cosmetic type.
> 3 - is there anything I need to know from the 'other side' of the router (on

The things of interest are
- the frame type used
- the network number used (I hope A1 is not a guess)

If u recompiled the kernel to use built-in devices instead of modules try
to edit your /etc/lilo.conf file and add the following at the beginning of
hte file.
append = "ether = 0,0, eth0".
save and run 'lilo' at command line. This line should force the system to
probe the card. Try also (if dthis doesn't work) to assign an IRQ and IO to
the append line. (ie. append = "ether= 11, 0x300, eth0").
If you compiled the kernel using modules try to edit the file
/etc/conf.modules and add aliases for the cards to it.
Check out this site too for more help.

The card does work if the only one present into the system.

Mmmm... what _exactly_ are you up to??
If you're bridging I think the usual algorithm is to maintain a table
of MAC address/interface pairs so you know which interface to send a
packet out of. If you see an packet with a destination mac address
which you don't know a specific interface for forward it to all, you
